Volleyball Swept on the Road By West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Bloomsburg volleyball team fell in straight sets, (23-25, 20-25, 23-25), to West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest inside Hollinger Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

Marlee Johnson (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) led the Huskies with 10 kills in the contest, recording her 19th double-digit kill performance of the season and sixth-straight. Sophie Wales (Port Matilda, Pa./State College) finished not far behind with eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Wales also posted two aces and two total blocks in the match.

Overall, Bloomsburg (8-15, 5-5 PSAC East) posted 33 kills while West Chester (12-12, 4-6) finished the day with 44 kills.

The contest saw the two teams traded early two-point sequences, with Elise Adelman (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) notching the Huskies first kill of the game. WCU took control on an 8-2 run before a back-and-forth exchange moved the score to 15-8. The maroon and gold swung the momentum in their favor on a 10-3 run that saw kills from Johnson and Emily Gustie (Crofton, Md./Crofton). Kills from Katie Kuehl (Aston, Pa./Archmere Academy (Del.)) and Lydia Worthing (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood Antis) put Bloomsburg ahead 21-20 before the Golden Rams rallied to score four unanswered and looked to close out the set. A pair of attack errors moved Bloomsburg within one before a service error handed West Chester the first set, 25-23.

After an early exchange moved the score to 2-2 in the second, WCU rattled off six-straight to take an early lead in the set. Wales and Worthing posted kills to close the gap slightly, before the programs traded short, back-and-forth runs throughout the entire set. The Huskies were unable to fully mount a comeback, dropping set two, 25-20.

Gustie put the Bloomsburg on the board first in the third set with an ace before Hannah Au (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) posted her first-career kill. After Bloomsburg went ahead 5-3, West Chester responded with a three-point swing to gain the lead. A 6-3 Huskies run gave the lead back to the maroon and gold be back-and-forth exchanges knotted the game at 15 apiece. West Chester took a 19-16 lead on the back a 4-1 run before another 6-3 swing from Bloomsburg tied the game at 22-22. The Huskies were unable to avoid the sweep however, as West Chester took the final set 25-23.

Bloomsburg returns to the court on Friday, November 8th for a 7 p.m. matchup against Shippensburg inside Heiges Field House.
