Volleyball Bested in Four-Set Contest Against Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg volleyball team fell, 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 17-25, 8-25), to Shippensburg inside Heiges Field House in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup on Friday night.
 
Marlee Johnson (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) posted a team-leading 12 kills in the contest with a .219 hitting percentage. Katie Kuehl (Aston, Pa./Archmere Academy (Del.)) notched ten kills and a .250 hitting percentage on 28 total attacks. Elise Adelman (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) recorded 32 assists and a pair of kills.
 
Johnson opened the scoring with a kill before Bloomsburg (8-16, 5-6 PSAC East) and Shippensburg (15-11, 9-2) traded points to a 4-3 score. A four-point run swing the Huskies take a 7-4 lead with kills from Emily Gustie (Crofton, Md./Crofton) and Kuehl. The Raiders managed to close the gap before a 10-3 run pushed the maroon and gold ahead 18-10. The sequence saw four aces and kills from Johnson, Gustie and Lydia Worthing (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood Antis). SU attempted to close the gap, but the Huskies held on to take the opening set 25-19.
 
The second set saw Johnson yet again record the first point before Shippensburg responded with three-straight to take an early lead. Bloomsburg notched back-to-back-points to level the score before trading points to a 7-7 score. A 5-1 sequence from SU advanced the score to 12-8. From there, the Raiders kept the maroon and gold at arm's length for much the set, taking set two 25-19.
 
Shippensburg jumped ahead to an early 5-2 lead in the third before a five-point run lead by the serving of Allison Saalfrank (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) gave Bloomsburg a 7-5 lead. After battling to an 11-10 score, SU notched its own five-point swing to take back the momentum. A 6-3 run moved Bloomsburg within one before Shippensburg rallied with seven-straight to take the set, 25-17.
 
The fourth set was all Shippensburg from the start, as the Raiders jumped to 5-1 lead early on. Bloomsburg came within one point of the lead before a five-point run gave SU an 11-5 lead. The Raiders controlled the rest of the way, winning the fourth set 25-8.
 
Bloomsburg returns to the court on Saturday, November 9 for a 1 p.m. contest with Shepherd inside the Butcher Center.
