Baseball Splits Road Doubleheader with Lock Haven

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) road doubleheader against Lock Haven, dropping game one 10-2 before holding on for an 8-7 victory in game two.

Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) posted a team leading 3 RBIs on the day while Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) recorded three hits and two RBIs.

Game 1

Lock Haven (6-12, 3-5 PSAC East) took an early lead on Bloomsburg (3-12, 1-7) in the bottom of the first on an unusual play. After recording an unassisted out at first, Metzger collided with Greg Cristino and dropped the ball, allowing Gavin Neal to score.

The Bald Eagles posted four runs in the fourth and fifth innings and one run in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead.

The Huskies avoided the shutout as Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) roped a two-RBI double into left field to score Jacob Reifer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia Area) and Ryan Flury (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township).

Will Dean (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) was tacked with the loss, allowing five earned runs in four innings pitched.

Garrett Starr picked up his second win of the year, striking out nine in his second complete game of the year.

Game 2

A pair of walks drawn by Ebbert and Metzger in the first allowed Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) to load the bases on a single to second base.

Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) drew a four-pitch walk to bring home the first run for the maroon and gold.

Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) reached on a fielder's choice that saw Metzger get thrown out of the plate. Wilson then scored on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead after one.

Metzger grounded out to the shortstop in the second to bring Jeremy Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Pittston Area) across the plate.

Lock Haven pulled within one on a sacrifice-fly to right field, with a second run coming in on an error by Ebbert.

Cawley picked up his second run of the day as Metzger once again brought him home, this time with a single to left field.

The Bald Eagles pulled within one yet again with an RBI-single to right field.

Bloomsburg posted another two runs in the top of the fifth. Reifer scored LaBarbera from second on a double to left centerfield. Reifer completed his trip around the bases on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a 6-3 advantage.

Metzger recorded his third RBI of the contest with a solo home run in the sixth.

Lock Haven scored twice in the bottom of the frame on a two-RBI double down the right field line.

A sacrifice-fly in the top of the seventh from Joe Levis (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) extended the lead to three.

The Bald Eagles yet again brought the contest within a single run on a two-RBI single to right field.

On a 3-2 count with two outs and runners on first and second, Gavin Neal grounded a ball to LaBarbera at third who dove at Lance Baldensperger in an attempt to end the game. Baldensperger was called safe, allowing Cristino to step up to the plate with the bases loaded.

Cristino connected with a 3-1 pitch that was heading towards the gap between first and second. The ball hit of the runner on first ending the contest on a runner's interference.

Daniel Koppisch (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) picked up his first career win, striking out three in 2.1 innings pitched.

Bloomsburg is back in action on Tuesday, March 19 as they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3 p.m. at Danny Litwhiler Field.
