Historic Season Continues as #20 Lacrosse Moves to 6-0 with a 15-7 Win Over Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The rainy and cold conditions did not cool off the #20 Bloomsburg lacrosse offense as the Huskies scored 15 goals in their second-straight game in route to a 15-7 win over Millersville, Saturday. The Huskies remain perfect on the season at 6-0 and 2-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action while the Marauders fall to 2-4 for the year and 0-2 in conference action.

The Huskies are 6-0 for the first time since at least 2000, according to available records at the time of writing this story. During the 2003 season, in which Bloomsburg won the PSAC title and finished as the NCAA semifinalist, the Huskies dropped the opening game of the season before going on a 13-game winning streak to finish the year 13-2.

Bloomsburg fell behind early as Rachel Kinney scored the game's opening goal at the 13:57 mark, but senior Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) won the ensuing draw control to allow the Huskies to set up their offense. Freshman Kayla Stressman (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) continued her impressive debut with the Huskies as she tied the game with her ninth goal of the season, thanks to an assist from junior Tori Bruno (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley). Stressman's goal kicked off a four-goal run for Bloomsburg in which Cassidy Griffin (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), Stoll, and Bruno scored to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead with 5:05 to play in the first quarter.

Both teams were held scoreless in the final five minutes of the period and the Huskies carried its 4-1 lead into the first intermission.

The Marauders found a bit of a run in the second quarter as the hosts used two unanswered goals in the first half of the period to cut the Huskies' advantage to one, 4-3, with 7:26 to play. The defenses of both teams shined in the final seven minutes of the period as neither team scored, and seven caused turnovers were credited between both squads.

The Bloomsburg offense was rejuvenated by the halftime break as the Huskies exploded for five-straight goals to essentially put the game away, 9-3, with 7:44 to play in the third. Madison Coyle (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) got her first of the game and 17th of the season thanks to another assist by Bruno at the 12:25 mark and Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Brianna Austin (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) went back-to-back within 30 seconds of each to give the Huskies a 7-3 lead. Griffin found the back of the net for the second time to push the Bloomsburg lead to 8-3 with 9:10 remaining. Kristen Lee (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) caused a turnover on the Marauder's next possession and Stressman got the pass from Lee to score her 10th goal of the season and give Bloomsburg a 9-3 lead.

Millersville finally stopped the Huskies' offense at the 7:01 mark as Shannon Meder scored a free position shot to cut the lead to 9-5. Bloomsburg closed out the quarter with its 10th goal of the game as Sophia Zelasko (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) got on the scoreboard with her third strike of the season as the Huskies played a woman-down. Zelasko benefited from another assist from Bruno to give the Huskies a 10-4 lead with 15 minutes left in regulation.

Coyle pushed the Bloomsburg lead to 11-4 just 35 seconds into the fourth quarter and Millersville quickly had an answer to cut the lead to 11-5 at the 13:29 mark. Coyle and Julia Cote (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) went back-to-back for the Huskies, though three minutes apart to give the Huskies a 13-5 advantage with 9:07 to play. Millersville kept the 10-goal lead for the Huskies just out of reach as Ashlyn Simonetti scored at the 8:19 mark to cut the lead to 13-6 but Delaney Fox (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) answered 25 seconds later to give the Huskies a 14-6 lead with 7:54 to play.

Cote scored the Huskies' final goal at the 6:02 mark to push the Bloomsburg lead to 15-6.  Kaleigh Funk scored with 1:41 to play in regulation for Millersville to bring the score to its final 15-7 in favor of Bloomsburg.

Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was impressive once again in cage for the Huskies as she made 11 saves and allowed just seven goals. Foley held the Marauders to a 3-for-8 day on free position shots and picked up three ground balls and caused one turnover.

Coyle led the Huskies with six points behind three goals and three assists while Bruno had a career day with six points. Bruno dished out a career-best five assists and added a goal of her own. Stressman scored twice and won a career- and team-best 10 draw controls.

Defensively, Coyle led the team with three caused turnovers and three ground balls while Lee caused two turnovers and picked up two ground balls.

The two teams were even on the ground ball battle with 28 each, while Stoll led the way for the Huskies with four. Bloomsburg won the draw control battle, 16-10, including seven in the Huskies' six-goal third quarter.

Bloomsburg returns to action to face #17 Kutztown University in a battle for the top of the PSAC on Wednesday, March 26 at 3:00 p.m.
