Wilson Walks Off Game One as Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Kutztown

Huskies record four home runs and five doubles in twin bill

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team won game one of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader against Kutztown, 8-7, on walk-off home run before falling 8-7 in game two at Danny Litwhiler Field on Friday afternoon.

Jacob Reifer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia Area) went 5-for-6 at the plate while Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) recorded three RBIs on a pair of home runs during the Huskies split with the Golden Bears.

Game 1 – Bloomsburg 8, Kutztown 7

After Reifer led off with a single, Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) got Bloomsburg (7-16, 4-10 PSAC East) on the board first in the bottom of the first with a no-doubt home run over the right field wall.

Kutztown (9-17, 3-7) responded with a two-run homer of its own in the second to tie the game. Michael Burns then gave the Golden Bears the lead on an RBI-double to right field.

Reifer answered for the Huskies in the bottom of the inning with a right-field double to bring Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) across the plate to tie the game.

A sacrifice-fly in the fourth put KU ahead by one yet again before Reifer scored from second on a wild pitch to tie the game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Metzger launched his sixth home run of the season over the left field wall to put Bloomsburg ahead. Dansby Keenan (Cleveland Heights, Oh./Benedictine) then lined a two-RBI double into the left-center field gap to give the maroon and gold a 7-4 lead.

Kutztown managed to bring three runs across the plate and tie the game in the seventh, forcing the Huskies to hit in the bottom of the frame.

After Owen Wilhide (York, Pa/Northeastern) grounded out to the shortstop and Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) went down swinging on a nine-pitch at bat, Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) stepped up to the plate with two outs.

On a 2-2 count, Wilson fired a shot over the right field wall to give Bloomsburg the win.

Reifer went 3-for-4 in game one with a pair of doubles. He also recorded two runs and an RBI.

Ebbert, Metzger and Wilson each went 1-for-3 with a home run while combining a for four RBIs.

Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) got the nod for game on, striking out three and allowing three earned runs in five innings.

Daniel Koppisch (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) picked up the win after throwing just two pitches in the bottom of the seventh.

Game 2 – Kutztown 8, Bloomsburg 7

Similar to the first leg of the twin bill, Reifer got a hit as the leadoff batter, this time with a double to right-center field. Metzger crushed his second home run of the season, and seventh of the season, over the right-center field wall to put two runs on the board early on.

A two-RBI double from KU in the second brought the score even until Ebbert line a double down the right field line to score Jeremy Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Pittston Area). Reifer attempted to score from second on the play but was tagged at the plate.

Reifer scored in the fifth as the Golden Bears failed to turn two on Metzger. Metzger then scored on an RBI-single up the middle from LaBarbera.

In the sixth, Cawley scored on what looked to be a sacrifice-fly for the Huskies, but it was dropped by the left fielder, allowing Ebbert to reach first.

With the bases loaded later in the inning, Wilhide reached on a fielder's choice as Kutztown attempted to stop Reifer from scoring at the plate. The Golden Bears couldn't make the play and looked to get Wilhide out at first. The throw was not in time and the first baseman  immediately threw back to home, getting Ebbert out to minimize the damage.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, KU scored six runs in four at bats on two hits and two errors to take the lead.

Bloomsburg couldn't bring a run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh, falling in game two to split the doubleheader.

Refier went 2-for-2 in game two with two walks. He recorded five hits, five runs and three doubles on the day.

Ebbert and Metzger posted two RBIs each as both men went 2-for-6 on the day.

Scott Gilbert (Scranton, Pa./Abington Heights) went five innings after getting the start in game two, striking out eight while allowing just four hits and two runs.

Koppisch was tacked with the loss, allowing just two hits and one earned run in the final two innings.

Bloomsburg travels to Kutztown on Saturday, March 30 as the close out the series with the Golden Bears beginning at noon.
