Hot Bats for the Huskies Lift Baseball to Sweep Over Kutztown

Huskies recorded 21 hits across two games

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team swept Kutztown, 9-4 and 6-1, on the road in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader at North Campus Field in Kutztown on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies posted a combined 21 hits across two games while holding the Golden Bears to 11 hits.

Game 1 – Bloomsburg 9, Kutztown 4

Jacob Reifer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia Area) and Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) each drew walks to open the contest before moving to second and third on a wild pitch. Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) recorded RBI-groundouts to second to score the baserunners and give the Bloomsburg (9-16, 6-10 PSAC East) the early 2-0 advantage.

A three-run home run from Jimmy Kerley in the bottom of the third gave Kutztown (9-19, 3-9) a one-run lead.

The top of the fourth saw the Huskies rattle off four consecutive two-out singles to bring a pair of runs across the plate. Joe Levis (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Reifer each posted an RBI in the inning by bringing home Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) and Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) to put the maroon and gold back on top.

A double from Dansby Keenan (Cleveland Heights, Oh./Benedictine) in the top of the sixth led off the frame before he reached home on a fielding error by Brennan Rozich.

Kennan roped a bases loaded, two-RBI single to left center field to put Bloomsburg ahead, 7-3, in the top of the seventh. Wilson singled to the shortstop to load the bases once more before LaBarbera was brought home as Riley drew a walk. A sacrifice-fly from Levis scored Keenan to give the Huskies a six-run lead.

The Golden Bears scored one run in the bottom of the frame before ultimately falling to Bloomsburg, 9-4.

Andrew Armstrong (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) picked up his first win of the season, striking out two batters and allowing one hit in two innings pitched.

Game 2 – Bloomsburg 6, Kutztown 1

The Huskies drove in five runs in the first inning to set the tone for game two. After Ebbert reached on a double, Metzger launched his sixth home run in his last five games over the left center field wall to put the maroon and gold ahead.

LaBarbera kept the momentum going for Bloomsburg, working back an early 1-2 count to draw a walk in an eight-pitch at bat. Wilson and Jeremy Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Pittston Area) then hit singled in subsequent at bats with Cawley recording an RBI on LaBarbera's run.

A double from Levis brought Wilson in from second and Reifer scored Cawley on an RBI-single to the shortstop.

An RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth from Kutztown broke the shutout before Bloomsburg regained the five-run lead in the sixth on an RBI-bunt single from Reifer to score Cawley. The maroon and gold held on to the lead for the second win of the day.

Will Dean (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) recorded his second win of the season in a complete game, posting four strikeouts and zero earned runs.

Wilson went 4-for-8 on the day, scoring twice and batting in another run.

Reifer notched four hits on the day as well, recording three RBIs and a run.

Keenan posted three hits including two in game one. He scored twice and batted in a pair of runs in the contest. Cawley and Levis each went 2-for-4 in game two.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 for a non-conference matchup with Clarion at 3 p.m. at Danny Litwhiler Field.
