SHEPHERDSTOWN, Pa. – The #23 Bloomsburg lacrosse team fell to Shepherd University 13-9, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies dropped to 8-3 on the year and 4-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play while the Rams improved to 5-6 and 3-4 in conference action.
The Rams struck first with a pair of goals in the first three minutes to go up 2-0. The Huskies got on the board at the 10:38 mark as
Sophia Zelasko (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) tallied her fourth goal of the season on a free position shot. The Rams got the goal back just two minutes later to push their lead back to two, 3-1.
Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) kicked off a three-goal run for the Huskies starting at the 3:58 mark of the first to give Bloomsburg a 4-3 lead with 10:59 to play in the second. After Stoll's 13
th of the season,
Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and
Madison Coyle (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) went back-to-back to begin the second quarter. Shanna Dextradeur tied the game at 4-4 for the Rams at the 8:49 mark before Stoll found the back of the net for the second time to give the Huskies a 5-4 lead midway through the quarter.
The Rams answered with five straight goals, including three to end the second and two to start the third to take a 9-5 lead with 6:44 to play in the quarter. Stoll scored at the 5:08 mark to halt the Shepherd run and cut the lead to 9-6, but Holly Poe scored with 27 seconds left in the period to push the Rams' lead back to four, 10-6, with 15 minutes to play.
Coyle scored for the second time in the game at the 11:44 mark of the fourth to cut the lead back to three, 10-7, but the Rams answered with a pair of goals to take a 12-7 lead with 9:08 to go.
Maya Fulmer (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and Coyle scored back-to-back woman-up goals to trim the lead back to three, 12-9, but Sam Lassahn scored the game's final goal at 4:10 to hand the Rams the 13-9 win.
Coyle and Stoll each finished with three goals while Coyle led the team with five draw controls, two caused turnovers, and five ground balls. Sitko had a goal and an assist while Zelasko and Fulmer each had a goal.
Katie Fluck (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) finished the game with an assist.
As a team, the Huskies were 4-for-5 in free position shots.
Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) had five saves in 52:49 minutes of work while her counterpart, Destiny Rockwell made eight saves in the win for Shepherd.
The Huskies won the draw control battle 15-11 and were 15-for-17 on clears.
Bloomsburg returns to action on Wednesday when the Huskies host Millersville for a 2:00 p.m. PSAC East contest at Steph Pettit Stadium.
