Baseball Drops Road Doubleheader to West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team dropped a pair of games in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader against West Chester on Tuesday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.

Jacob Reifer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia Area) led the Huskies going 5-for-7, including an RBI-double in game two.

Game One – West Chester 9, Bloomsburg 3

Serving as the home team during the doubleheader, Bloomsburg (12-23, 8-16 PSAC East) garnered early momentum in the bottom of the first with a lead-off single from Reifer. Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) laid down a successful bunt before Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) drew a walk to load the bases.

Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) singled to center field to bring Reifer across the plate for the opening run. A pair of sacrifice-flies from Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Owen Wilhide (York, Pa/Northeastern) brought Ebbert and Metzger in to give the maroon and gold an early 3-0 lead.

West Chester (29-5, 15-5) broke the shutout in the top of the third on and RBI-single up the middle. A wild pitch brought in the Golden Rams' second run before Sean Szestowicki tied the game with an RBI-triple to right center field.

WCU took the lead in the fourth with a two-RBI triple from Anthony Boccio. A sacrifice-fly from Szestowicki completed Boccio's trip around the bases to put West Chester ahead 6-3.

The Golden Rams tacked on three more runs in the seventh to take game one 9-3 after a nearly three-hour ballgame.

Scott Gilbert (Scranton, Pa./Abington Heights) got the start on the mound, recording two strikeouts while allowing three earned runs.

Zach Steen (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was pinned with the loss after allowing a pair of runs in two-thirds innings in the fourth.

Game Two – West Chester 6, Bloomsburg 5

A wild pitch in the top of the first gave West Chester the first run of game two before extending the lead on a sacrifice-fly in the second frame.

The Huskies scored their first of the contest in the second inning as LaBarbera crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Joe Levis (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) sent an RBI-single down the rightfield line to bring Nico Ingalls (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) in to tie the game.

Reifer followed it up with an RBI-double down the leftfield line to bring Jeremy Stine (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) across the plate of the Huskies' go-ahead run. An overthrown pickoff attempt allowed Levis to but the maroon and gold up by two.

A pair of walks with the bases loaded tied the game for WCU in the third before reclaiming the lead with an RBI-single through the left side from Avery Spencer in the fourth.

Ingalls helped the Huskies tie the game yet again in the fifth with an RBI-single to left center to score Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy).

Spencer gave the Golden Rams the lead again in the sixth on an RBI-single. West Chester escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the frame en route to a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.

Landon Lorson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) gave up four runs in his game two start, going 2.2 innings. Andrew Armstrong (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) struck out both batter he faced in his appearance before Brian Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) earned the loss after allowing just one run and four hits in 3.2 innings.

Bloomsburg returns to Danny Litwhiler Field on Friday, April 19 as they host No. 11 East Stroudsburg for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
