FLUSHING, N.Y – The Bloomsburg baseball team dropped a non-conference twin bill to Queens College on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) hit a grand slam in game two to record his 25th career home run.
Â
Game One – Queens 5, Bloomsburg 0 Â
Â
Bloomsburg (13-30) and Queens (27-15) battled closely through a scoreless four innings to open the game.
Â
A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth allowed the Knights to crack open the scoring. A fielder' choice brought in the second run of the innings for QC, before a triple brought in another two runs to make it 4-0.
Â
Queens put a fifth run on the board in the sixth before closing out the shutout in the top of the seventh.
Â
Will Dean (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) got the start and the loss on the mound for the Huskies and allowed six hits and four runs in five-and-a-third innings.
Â
Game Two – Queens 9, Bloomsburg 8 Â
Â
The scoring in the nightcap began much earlier than game one. Phil Krpata stole third in the opening frame before making it home on a throwing error from
Joe Levis (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin).
Â
An RBI-double down the left-field line and an RBI-single through the left side brought the Knights' advantage to 3-0 early on.
Â
Levis worked an eight-pitch at bat in the second to walk in a run with the bases-loaded. An RBI-single in the bottom of the inning allowed Queens to regain its three-run lead.
Â
The Knights pulled away in the fourth with five runs to take a 9-1 lead.
Â
Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) was hit by a pitch in the fifth to bring Levis home with the bases loaded.
Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) then drove in
Judah Miller (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) for the Huskies third run of the game. An RBI-single to center field from
Nico Ingalls (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) allowed LaBarbera to complete his trip around the bases.
Â
Metzger brought the maroon and gold within one run with a grand slam. His 25th of the season and PSAC-leading 12th home run moves the first baseman to one run short of fifth all-time on the Huskies home run leaderboard.
Â
Queens sent all three Bloomsburg batters down swinging to cut the Huskies comeback attempt short.
Â
Scot Gilbert was tacked with the loss after pitching just two-thirds of an inning.
Daniel Koppisch (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) went three innings with two strikeouts and just three hits.
Mason Keene (Bear, Del./Appoquinimink) struck out three and gave up just one hits in two innings as the Huskies final reliever.
Â
Bloomsburg returns to action on Tuesday, April 30 as it hosts Pitt-Johnstown at Danny Litwhiler Field
