Softball Drops Two on the Road at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg softball team dropped a pair of games in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action against Lock Haven Sunday afternoon.

Game one would come down to extra innings, and despite the Huskies scoring two in the top of the eighth, one hit decided the game in favor of the Bald Eagles in a 3-2 win for the home side.

In contrast, the day's second contest started with both sides scoring early, but Lock Haven pulled away to secure its second victory of the afternoon, 6-2.

The Huskies fall to 18-13 overall on the season with a 7-7 record in conference action. The Bald Eagles improve to 10-18 and sit at 6-10 in the PSAC Eastern Division.

Game One:
Both sides had opportunities through the first seven, but an ensuing pitchers' duel kept things knotted at 0-0.

Lock Haven was in the position to score early through the first three innings, getting a runner to second in each. Starting on the mound, Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) worked out of each situation to keep the Bald Eagles off the scoreboard.

The Bald Eagles would put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out in the fourth, but two timely strikeouts from Sowers kept her team in the contest.

Bloomsburg's first real threat of the contest came in the fifth, getting two runners on with two outs in the inning as Lock Haven escaped to the bottom of its frame.

The Huskies had the better of the scoring chances in the sixth and seventh innings, getting two runners aboard with one out in the top of the sixth and a runner on second in the seventh, with neither opportunity came to fruition as Sowers got Bloomsburg into extras by striking out the side in the bottom portion of inning number seven.

In extras, Bloomsburg stung several hits together to get on the board. Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) led off the eighth with a double down the left field line. A great defensive effort at shortstop from the Bald Eagles allowed the home side to get the lead runner before a RBI double from Sarah Yamrick (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) into right-center gave the Huskies their first run of the game. Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) tacked on one more with a RBI single up the middle of the infield to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the frame.

Lock Haven opened its eighth with a leadoff single and a second runner aboard via a fielding error. A sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with one out for the Bald Eagles, but a three-run home run over the fence in left field proved more than enough to capture the win.

Game Two:
Bloomsburg got things going in early in game two with a pair of runs in the first. Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) reached base to lead off the game after being hit by a pitch, as Lenner followed with a single to put two runners on with one out. Yamrick stepped into the box with two outs and picked up where she left off from the first leg of the doubleheader with a two-run double into the gap to establish a 2-0 lead.

From there, Lock Haven tied the game at 2-2 after the first as part of six unanswered runs to take game two.

Both sides cooled off in the next three innings, with neither side able to build on the early momentum.

The Huskies threatened in the top portion of the fifth, putting runners on the corners with two outs, in the end, to no avail. The Bald Eagles would surge in the fourth for four runs to grab and hold onto a 6-2 advantage for good.

Yamrick continued to flash at the plate, with the freshman finishing the day 3-for-7 with two doubles, a run scored, and three RBI.

On the Horizon:
The Huskies return to Jan M. Hutchinson Field for a pair of PSAC doubleheaders, beginning on Tuesday, April 9 at 2:00 p.m. against Mansfield.
