WILMINGTON, Del. - The Bloomsburg men's soccer team pulled off another road victory Wednesday evening with a 1-0 win over Goldey-Beacom.
The star of the match for the Huskies was
Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area) occupying the net. The Cherryville, Pa. native matched his season-high from a season ago with seven stops to keep the Bloomsburg defense afloat and provided the attack with a fighting chance.
The offense's breakthrough came in the 51st minute from a long throw by
Teagan Wallace (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional). The midfielder launched the ball into the box, connecting with
Kody Besser (Lacey Township, N.J./Lacey Township). The two-time All-PSAC East selection flicked the ball to the back post to find a soaring
Sam Blumberger (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy), nodding the ball home and grabbing a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies move to 2-1 on the young season as Goldey-Beacom falls to 0-3.
How It Happened:
Parker Nickelsen (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) took the first chance of the game offensively, delivering a shot that drifted wide in a physical start to the day. The Lighting responded later with a shot that ended up on the wrong side of the goal.
Rimple was engaged from the start of the contest, making three saves during the first half. His first came inside the 30th minute, forcing a shot from Tiwalde Ogunfadebo out to force a Goldey-Beacom corner. His second save came in continuation from another set piece, this time deflecting a shot from Lucas Fernandes. The graduate student's third save in five minutes came at the start of the 35th, parrying a shot from Johs Herden. The Huskies' tenured keeper followed up the sequence with his fourth save of the opening half at the tail end of the 42nd minute.
Bloomsburg had its most threatening sequence in the final three minutes of the first half, orchestrated by
Quaid Molino (Charleston, S.C./Wando (S.C.) / South Williamsport (Pa.)). The junior midfielder put his first shot off the crossbar and quickly followed with a blocked attempt that trickled out before a corner led to an offside whistle to close the first 45 minutes.
The second-half intensity picked up in the second half, with the two sides combining for five yellow cards and 15 fouls, with Goldey-Beacom responsible for four yellows and Bloomsburg tallying 10 fouls.
As Rimple notched his fifth save of the afternoon, the Huskies found a breakaway chance in the aftermath. With build-up play from the middle, Blumberger settled the ball at his feet to find
Zach Morales (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) through behind the defense. The junior's attempt managed to trickle past the keeper but slid just outside the left post to keep the match even.
Bloomsburg's pressure paid off in the 51st minute with the help of the long throw as the Huskies took advantage of their height to take a 1-0 lead. The press from Bloomsburg continued as
Sam Palmer (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) was the next Husky to have a chance on net, with the freshman narrowly missing his second career chance outside the right post.
The chippiness of the contest permeated in the closing minutes as both teams scrapped for a goal before the final whistle. With the game on the brink, the Lightning made a last-ditch effort to net an equalizer, sending men forward. As the final seconds ticked down, Goldey-Beacom sent a cross from the left wing to the back post that found the foot of an attacker as time expired.
Numbers of Note:
13 - Rimple's seven-save performances puts him third in program history with 13 career shutouts.
14 - After being outshot 7-3 in the first half, the Huskies upped their offensive intensity with an 11-4 shot advantage in the second half.
5 - Blumberger netted his fifth career goal with his second-half header.
On the Horizon:
The Huskies are back at Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday, September 14, for a 12:00 p.m. start against the Findlay Oilers.
