Women's Soccer Shines in Historic Program Win Over Lock Haven

Head coach Matt Haney becomes the second-winningest coach in program history with win No. 105 in charge of the Huskies.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.. - The Bloomsburg women's soccer team picked up an emphatic 4-0 win on the road against Lock Haven Wednesday afternoon.

The win gave head coach Matt Haney his 105th during his tenure with the Huskies and moved him into sole possession of the second-most wins in program history. Haney eclipsed Hall of Fame head coach Chuck Laudermilch, who began the program in 1990. Laudermilch finished his career with a 104-35-8 record in eight seasons with Bloomsburg from 1990-1997. Haney is now second behind the late Sandy Dickson, who posted a 139-89-29 record in 13 years with Bloomsburg from 1998-2010 after taking over the program from Coach Laudermilch.

Haney began his tenure at Bloomsburg in 2015 and has guided the Huskies to a 105-44-19 record over the last nine years. He has a pair of PSAC Championships and two NCAA Regional titles, guiding the Huskies to back-to-back NCAA Elite Eight appearances in 2018 and 2019. The Huskies went to four straight NCAA tournaments from 2018 to 2022 with Coach Haney and have never missed the PSAC Tournament under his direction. During their run to the Elite Eight in 2019, Bloomsburg tied the program record for most wins in a season with 18, a feat only done once. The previous 18-win season came with Coach Laudermilch at the helm as Bloomsburg went 18-3-1 and made it to the NCAA Quarterfinals after winning the PSAC title. Coach Haney has five double-digit win seasons under his belt, and the Huskies have never finished below .500 during his first nine seasons at Bloomsburg.

After scoring two goals in their previous four contests, the Huskies found the back of the net in a plethora of ways thanks to the efforts of several contributors. Brooke Foster (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) led the way with her second career multi-goal effort in the win. Alexa Arrigale (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) and Daryn Savage (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Wood) each picked up goals, while Anna Dalesandro (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and Lindsey Bull (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) recorded assists.

Bloomsburg improves to 3-2 overall on the season, picking up its first win in conference play to move to a 1-2 record in conference. The Bald Eagles slip to 1-2-2 on the season and 1-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division.

How It Happened:
The first 10 minutes of the contest saw both teams create chances at goal. Sydney Donovan (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) had the first crack for the Huskies inside two minutes as Aubrey Hondros (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) missed right in the ninth minute.

Samantha Merklin (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and the Bloomsburg defense did not have as involved a day tracking back as in previous contests but remained alert in the back third. Merklin made her lone two saves of the afternoon inside 20 minutes, first trapping a centered shot from Elizabeth Shultz and following it up with a stop on an attempt from Leana Cuzzocrea.

The Huskies maintained a 5-1 shot advantage from the 22nd minute heading into the final minute of the first half, as Bloomsburg's persistent pressure struck gold in the final 10 seconds.

With time ticking down, the Huskies received a corner as the team hurried into positions with under 30 seconds in the opening half. Dalesandro raced to take the kick and put the ball in play. Arrigale took her position next to the Lock Haven goalkeeper, successfully getting inside leverage on the ball at the near post to muscle the ball home for a 1-0 lead at the half.

Bloomsburg used the momentum gained at the end of the first half to dominate play in the second. Winning a free kick inside the halfway line, Lindsey Bull (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) stepped and slotted a ball at the edge of the 18-yard box. The ball found Foster as the senior weaved her way through defenders to sneak her left foot onto the ball and poke it past the Bald Eagles' Megan Miller.

After a shot from Lock Haven rattled the woodwork, the Huskies and Foster converted on their next chance from a corner. Foster stepped over to the far side of the field for an in-swinging ball that worked its way into the goal and through the hands of Miller for her second and a 3-0 Bloomsburg lead.

A goalkeeper change could not halt the Huskies as Savage tacked on for the fourth and final goal of the match. A referee whistle awarded Bloomsburg the ball outside the box just inside the 78th minute. Savage was the lone Husky to stand over the deadball before sneaking a shot over the shortest part of the wall and into the top right to make the advantage four as the team cruised to its second road win of the season.

Numbers of Note:
105 - Head coach Matt Haney picked up career win No. 105 in charge of the Huskies Wednesday, making him the second-winning coach in program history.

16-5 - The wire-to-wire display for the Huskies showed up in several areas on the pitch and the score sheet. Bloomsburg finished Wednesday night's contest with a 16-5 shot advantage over Lock Haven.

1 - As part of a dominant day for the Huskies, both Arrigale and Savage netted their first career goal in the victory against the Bald Eagles.
