Women's Soccer Opens 2024 Season With 1-0 Victory Over Goldey-Beacom

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's soccer team opened the 2024 season with a tally in the win column, defeating Goldey-Beacom 1-0 at Steph Pettit Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Bloomsburg (1-0) put the pressure on early, rattling off four shots in the opening eight minutes.

Goldey-Beacom (0-1) tested goalkeeper Samantha Merklin (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) in the tenth minute, as a shot from Sia Diakos proved to be the only shot of the game for the Lightning.

The Huskies fired eight more shots throughout the opening 45 minutes but were unable to find a way past goalkeeper Nikki Cashin.

The second half began much like the first, as the maroon and gold fired off several shots in the opening moments of the frame.

Bloomsburg finally broke through in the 61st minute as Sydney Donovan (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) launched a shot from well outside the box, going bar down for her first career goal. Brooke Foster (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) and Marlee Potillo (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) earned assists on the play.

The Huskies cruised to victory, out shooting Goldey-Beacom 23-1 in the contest.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, September 7 as they travel to Institute, West Virginia for a 1 p.m. matchup with West Virginia State.
