Women's Soccer Defeats West Virginia State, 1-0, On The Road

Institute, W.V. – Sydney Donovan (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) scored her second goal in as many games as he Bloomsburg women's soccer team defeated West Virginia State, 1-0, on the road Saturday afternoon,
 
Samantha Merklin (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) was tested early, saving a shot from the Yellow Jackets' Ellise Rennie five minutes in.
 
Bloomsburg registered its first shot of the game at the 13-minute mark, as Kennedy Kilchrist (Southampton, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) put one on target from well outside the box.
 
West Virginia State (0-1) entered halftime with a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal while the Huskies outshot WVSU, 6-5.
 
On a corner in the 60th minute, Aubrey Hondros (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) sent the ball into the box and connected with the head of Sydney Donovan (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink). The ball caromed off the ground and over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper to put the marron and gold ahead.
 
Several attempts from the Yellow Jackets were thwarted by Merklin as the Huskies held on for the 1-0 victory.
 
Bloomsburg finished the game with 14 shots while holding West Virginia State to 9 shots.
 
The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday, September 11 as the face off against East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. at Steph Pettit Stadium.
