Men's Soccer Secures 1-0 Win Over Lock Haven

Defining moments from the penalty spot lead to the Huskies first win of the 2024 season.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory on the road at Lock Haven.

The Huskies move to 1-1 on the season as the Bald Eagles fall to 0-1-1 following the cross-division matchup.

Despite having several near-miss opportunities, Teagan Wallace (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) supplied the game-winning effort after slotting home a rebound following a saved penalty. Sam Blumberger (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) and
Owen Hollobaugh (State College, Pa./State College) continued to generate goal-scoring chances, with Blumberger having a goal disallowed via an offside ruling and Hollobaugh coming away with a narrow miss on a free kick and having his penalty attempt stopped.

Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area) provided critical stops in the second half, finishing with three saves to keep a shutout and seal the win for the Huskies.

How It Happened:
Bloomsburg controlled possession and was the more prominent side in the attacking third. Blumberger had the first major scoring threat of the day after a breakaway through ball up the middle put him in front of the net with a defender to his back, slotting the ball just past the outside of the right post for the first shot of the game.

Patrick Walsh (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) had the next scoring chance for Bloomsburg getting an opportunity in front of goal. After the Huskies were awarded a throw, Wallace launched a ball into the box that landed at Walsh. Shielding a defender, the senior turned to the left, but Lock Haven goalkeeper Brady Freiwald stopped the shot after guessing correctly.

Bloomsburg posed another scoring threat inside the box after Braden Alicea (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) launched a free kick into the center of the box, connecting with Blumberger on a header into the top right corner that would be disallowed.

In the Huskies' final prominent chance of the first half, Hollobaugh stepped up over a free kick just over 20 yards out. Last season's PSAC East Freshman of the Year struck the ball well, nearly missing the bottom left corner without an attempt from Bald Eagles keeper.

Bloomsburg controlled every facet of the first half, outshooting Lock Haven 5-0 with a 2-0 corner difference despite being hindered by three offside whistles.

The physical nature of the matchup came into form in the second half, with neither side able to muster a quality scoring opportunity over 15 minutes into the final 45 minutes. The Bald Eagles recorded their first shot of the afternoon in the 64th minute after a low cross found the feet of a central Ryan Miller but the ensuing shot did not have enough power to challenge Huskies' keeper Rimple.

Bloomsburg's best opportunity came in the 70th minute after Hollobaugh received a check in the back by a Lock Haven defender to draw the penalty. Despite the attempt being saved by Freiwald, Wallace sprinted past his marker off the rebound to slot home the goal in the bottom left corner.

Moments later, the Bald Eagles were awarded a penalty of their own following a late whistle just inside the 18-yard box. In the one-on-one against midfielder Carter Rosno, Rimple's outstretched arm stopped the shot to the lower left corner to keep the Huskies in front.

Bloomsburg maintained its pressure throughout the final minutes, manufacturing additional opportunities in the final 15 minutes. The best and last chance for the Huskies came after a crunching tackle from Jaliyl Melvin (Mount Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) found the feet of Blumberger, with the junior laying a pass just along the left wing.

Rimple and the Bloomsburg defense closed down shop in the closing minutes clamping down on any last-ditch threats from the home side.

Numbers of Note:
Wallace's game-winner was his fifth career goal for the Huskies.

Rimple sits in the sole fourth position in program history after recording his 12th career clean sheet.

The two sides finished the contest combining for 29 foul calls.

On the Horizon:
The Huskies return to play on Wednesday, September 11, at 4:00 p.m. with a road contest against Goldey-Beacom.
