Men's Basketball Downed in PSAC Clash with Shepherd

Matt Bengel hit 1,000-career points in 17-point effort

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) became the 33rd member of the 1,000-point club for Bloomsburg men's basketball as the Huskies fell to Shepherd, 64-52, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) clash inside the Nelson Field House on Wednesday night.

For the second time in as many games, the Huskies had a player reach 1,000 career points as Louie Wild (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) hit the milestone against East Stroudsburg on Saturday, January 18. Bengel led the team in points with 17 on 6-of-12 shooting with a pair of three pointers.

Isiah Sherman (Philadelphia, Pa./Lincoln) recorded a career-high in points with 13 while going 4-for-9 from the floor. Danny Bruce (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) finished in the double digits with 10 points while hauling in three rebounds. Overall, the maroon and gold shot 34.5 percent (19-for-55) from the floor the Rams went 26-for-59 (44.1 percent) on the night.

Shepherd (12-6, 8-3 PSAC) got on the board first with Chase Paar sinking an early layup. Neither side found the basket for nearly two minutes until Sherman tied the game at 2-2. Another back-and-forth moved the score to 6-4 in favor of the Rams.

Bruce then posted all seven points in a 7-3 Huskies run that gave Bloomsburg an 11-9 lead. After Shepherd tied the game, Bengel and Wild each hit a three to give Bloomsburg its largest lead at 17-11. The Rams slowly clawed their way back, regaining the lead on a layup with just over seven minutes to play in the half. Entering halftime, Shepherd led 32-28.

Bengel recorded the first points of the half with a layup to cut the lead to two. Shepherd surged ahead with a 12-6 run to take a 50-36 advantage. Despite the best efforts of the maroon and gold, Shepherd downed the Huskies, 64-52.
