Men's Basketball Comes Up Short in Triple Overtime Against Lock Haven

Huskies' competed in its first triple-overtime matchup since 2013

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's basketball came up short against Lock Haven, 103-96, in a triple-overtime, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup inside the Nelson Field House on Wednesday night.

Bloomsburg (3-17, 2-11 PSAC) erased a 16-point Lock Haven (10-9, 7-6) lead in the second half en route to the Huskies' first triple-overtime contest since February 6, 2013.

Louie Wild (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) led the Huskies with 23 points on 8-of -18 shooting while going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Wild also posted a career-high five steals while notching four assists. Danny Bruce (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) posted his first-career double-double with career-highs in points (21), rebounds (10) and steals (4). Bruce went 8-for-17 from the floor while draining a trio of three-pointers.

Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) finished just shy of a 20-10 double-double, recording 19 points and nine rebounds. Bengel led the game with 52 minutes and 25 seconds played. It is the fourth-most minutes played in a single men's basketball contest across all divisions this season. Kent Olewiler (York, Pa./William Penn) tallied 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting.

Scoring came early and often in the matchup, with the Bald Eagles nailing a three-pointer just 14 seconds into the contest. Wild responded immediately for the Huskies, draining a three-pointer of his own to level the score. Lock Haven's Kevin Coleman gave the Bald Eagles the lead with a layup before Bruce sank a three to give the Huskies the advantage.

Coleman gave Lock Haven the lead with another layup, giving the visitors the momentum as the surged ahead to 2012 lead with 15 minutes to play in the half. Despite several pushes from the maroon and gold, Bloomsburg could not fully close the gap as the Bald Eagles lead 47-35 at halftime.

Bengel opened the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer before Lock Haven pulled ahead by 16, its largest lead of the contest. Bloomsburg then went on a 25-10 run to tie the game at 70-70 with three minutes to play. Bengel's game-tying layup was followed up by a jumper from Wild to give the Huskies the lead with 1:46 remaining. Coleman came up clutch for the Bald Eagles to tie the contest at 72-72 and force overtime.

Coleman found the basket yet again to start overtime before Wild drew a foul and went to the line for two shots. After sinking the first, his second free throw rattled off the rim and off the hands of a Lock Haven defender, giving possession back to the Huskies. Off the inbound, Bengel found Bruce in the paint who put it off the glass to put Bloomsburg ahead 75-74. Back-to-back jumpers from Bengel gave the maroon and gold a 79-74 lead with 2:43 to play.

A pair of free throws moved the Bald Eagles within one possession before Isiah Sherman (Philadelphia, Pa./Lincoln) pushed the Huskies' lead to 81-76. Lock Haven made it to the line just seconds later and hit both shots to sit three points back of the lead. At the buzzer, Lock Haven's Isaiah Stewart was fouled in three-point territory and sent to the line in the final second. Stewart came up clutch for the crimson and white, sinking all three to send the game to double-overtime.

The second overtime saw neither side take a lead larger than two points. The final moments of the frame saw Wild hit a fadeaway jumper to put the Huskies ahead with just 14 seconds to play. Lock Haven drove the paint in the final seconds and saw Kevin Coleman record a least second rebound and layup to force triple overtime.

Lock Haven took hold of the momentum in the third overtime, with three pointers from Eli Washington and Stewart. Bloomsburg was unable to find and answer and fell to the Bald Eagles, 103-96.
