Bengel Sets School-Record as Men's Basketball Outlasts Shippensburg, 89-78

Matt Bengel set a school record with eight steals

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) set a program record with eight steals as men's basketball defeated Shippensburg, 89-78, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup inside Nelson Field House on Saturday afternoon.
 
Bloomsburg (4-17, 3-11 PSAC) posted one its best shooting performances of the season shooting 52.5 percent (31-for-59) from the floor. Shippensburg shot 50.8 percent (31-61) in the contest.
 
Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) came close to posting a triple-double with a school-record eight steals while notching 22 points and seven rebounds. His eight steals are the most in a PSAC contest since the 2014-15 season. Louie Wild (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) played all 40 minutes of the contest and finished with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists.
 
Danny Bruce (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) finished with double-digit points for the fifth time in the past six games, tallying 17 points. Tony Henderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) finished with 13 points and three rebounds while Sean Haus (Southampton,Pa./William Tennent) posted 11 points with a trio of three-pointers.
 
After forcing an early turnover, Bengel drove the paint to put the Huskies ahead early. Shippensburg took the lead on a three-pointer from Timmy Conner before Wild responded with a triple of his own. The two teams traded points to level the score at 10-10 before a 15-5 Huskies' run gave the maroon and gold the momentum. The Huskies continued to slowly grow its advantage, with Bengel giving the Huskies a 41-27 lead going into half time.
 
The Huskies took the momentum early in the second half with Bruce recording the first basket of an 11-4, Bloomsburg run that gave the home team a 22-point lead. The Raiders slowly chipped away the maroon and gold's lead over the next seven minutes before a nine-point swing brought the Raiders with eight points. The Huskies managed to hold off the Raiders, with a pair of dunks helping to seal the win, 89-78.
 
Bloomsburg returns to action on Wednesday, February 5 for a road contest against Mansfield at 7:30 p.m.
