BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The No. 6-ranked Bloomsburg field hockey team defeated No. 2-ranked Shippensburg in shootout in a thrilling Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) clash at Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Kate Ferguson (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) scored the game-winner in the shootout as Bloomsburg (12-2, 4-2 PSAC) down the reigning conference champions. It is the first time the Huskies won against Shippensburg since the PSAC quarterfinals in 2015 and the first win at home since 2011.
Â
Bloomsburg went on the offensive early with Ferguson recording a shot wide two minutes into the contest. The first shot on goal came five minutes later as Ferguson tested Shippensburg's Emma Albee.
Â
After holding the Raiders without a shot in the first quarter, Bloomsburg and
Maura Greek (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) were tested in the second quarter. On a string of penalty corners, Greek turned aside two great chances from SU to keep the game scoreless.
Â
The second half was much of the same as Shippensburg posted six second-half shots while Bloomsburg tallied three. With neither side finding the back of the net in regulation, field hockey headed into overtime at Steph Pettit Stadium for the second time this week.
Â
Looking to end the game early in overtime, Bloomsburg came out of the break firing on all cylinders as it took just 16 seconds for
Alyxandra Flick (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) to fire a shot attempt. After her first shot was blocked, Flick saw her second chance opportunity go wide of the cage.
Sophie Lawler (Newport, Pa./Newport) then notched the first shot on net in overtime, but Albee stood tall to keep the game alive.
Shippensburg had a chance of their own just two minutes later but Greek made the save as the game headed to double overtime.
Â
The Raiders flipped the script on the Huskies, testing Greek early and often but the senior kept the home team alive. Shippensburg had two more chances late in the game but Greek came up big yet again. After Greek notched four saves in the second overtime frame, the Huskies headed to a shootout for the first time since September 6, 2023.
Â
Shippensburg shot first in the shootout and saw its first three shooters turned aside by Greek.
Morgan Magditch (Kintersville, Pa./Palisades) shot third for the Huskies and found the back of the net to give Bloomsburg the advantage. The Raiders' Elaina Fragassi leveled score in the fourth round. After a miss from either side, Ferguson drove to the right and got a shot past the sprawling netminder to give Bloomsburg the win.
Â
Greek finished the contest with nine saves in her NCAA-leading ninth shutout of the season.
Â
Bloomsburg returns to action on Wednesday, October 22 for a 5 p.m. contest with West Chester.
