No. 6 Field Hockey Downed by No. 2 Kutztown on the Road

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 6-ranked Bloomsburg field hockey saw its undefeated streak come to an end in 2-0 loss in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at No. 2-ranked Kutztown on Saturday night.

Entering the contest, Bloomsburg (10-1, 2-1 PSAC) and Kutztown (11-0, 3-0) were two of only four teams in Division II with an undefeated record.

The Golden Bears posted the first shot of the game four minutes in as a shot from Marissa Rice at the top of the circle forced Maura Greek (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) to make a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

KU continued to apply the pressure as they forced Greek to make three more saves in the quarter before finally getting one past the senior netminder. A deflected pass near the end line from Kutztown's Julia Traynor found its way to Erin Gonzalez in front, who batted the ball out of the air while falling.

The Huskies tallied their first shot early in the second quarter as Sophie Lawler (Newport, Pa./Newport) fired a reverse shot from the left side of the shooting circle. The Golden Bears' Tess Adolf stood tall and batted the shot out of play. KU notched just two shots in the second quarter with Greek turning both aside in the span of eight seconds.

The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle yet again with the two sides combining for five shots and just two shots on goal.

Kutztown struck again in halfway through the fourth frame as a shot from Olivia Kirkpatrick deflected off the stick of Rice to provide an insurance goal in the Golden Bears' win.

Greek finished the contest with a career-high 12 saves while KU outshot the Huskies, 17-3.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Saturday, October 11 as they travel to take on Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
