No. 22 Men's Soccer Bested on the Road By Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - No. 22 Bloomsburg men's soccer team fell 2-0 on the road against Millersville Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies (7-2-6, 3-2-4 PSAC East) conceded with just a few minutes remaining in the first half to provide the Marauders (9-3-4, 6-1-2 PSAC East) with the momentum heading into the break. Millersville would double its advantage in the latter stages of the contest to put the game away.

Bloosmburg finished the contest trailing 12-3 in total shots, with a 4-3 edge in shots on goal for the home team. The Huskies finished with the edge in corner kicks over the Marauders, 5-2, but could not capitalize on set pieces.

How It Happened:
In a contest that began with frequent exchanges of possession, it was the Huskies who had the first good look of the afternoon. Bloomsburg drew the first of its four first-half corner kicks eight minutes into the match, with Sam Blumberger (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) having the first go at goal to no avail. Millersville followed up the Huskies' attacking sequence with their first two shot attempts and a corner kick around the 10-minute mark of the contest.

A couple of near misses in the build-up play for both sides saw the action limited in the final third. Bloomsburg again looked to delve into its bag of tricks at the corner flag. The consecutive attempts once again saw the Huskies leave empty-handed.

With less than three minutes to play in the first half, Millersville was able to manufacture the first goal of the afternoon for a huge momentum swing. The Marauders played a ball out to the left wing, with the next pass being an awkward pass across the face of the goal. With several Huskies swarming to the attackers deep in the box, Millersville's Brian O'Neill had the time and space to fire home a shot to the top half of the net.

The Marauders continued to dictate the pace of play in the second half, controlling possession and creating positive attacking movements in Bloomsburg's defensive third. Millersville finished with an 8-2 advantage in shots during the second half.

The Huskies' best two opportunities in the second half once more came from set pieces. The first started with a free kick played to Blumberger just outside the box. The senior got inside position on his mark and headed a pass centrally to an elevated Owen Hollobaugh (State College, Pa./State College). The junior did a tremendous job to win in the air, but could not beat the goalkeeper. Another set piece saw Blumberger get a head to the ball, with his nod forward falling comfortably for the Marauders.

O'Neill and the Millersville would get the insurance needed with just over 10 minutes remaining in the match. O'Neill hit a well-placed and well-struck ball into the bottom left corner from the attacking midfield area to give the Marauders the season series over Bloomsburg.

On the Horizon:
The Huskies play their final nonconference game of the season on Monday, November 3, at 7:00 p.m. against Goldey-Beacom at Steph Pettit Stadium.
