FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore
Emily Simpson (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) scored with less than a minute to play in regulation to lift the Bloomsburg lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over Frostburg in the Huskies' season opener. It is the fourth-straight season-opening win for head coach
Shannon Hertz.

The Huskies had a balanced scoring attack as six different players found the back of the net and seven registered a point. Four Huskies had two goals including,
Tori Bruno (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley),
Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen),
Kayla Stressman (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn), and Simpson. It is the first multi-goal game of Simpson's career at Bloomsburg. Bruno led the team with four assists while Sitko, Stressman, and
Mia Boccippio (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) each had one.

Defensively,
Emily Wassel (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) led the Huskies with four caused turnovers and picked up three ground balls while
Mikayla Viola (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Drew Palumbo (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) led field players with four ground balls on the game.
Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was stellar in goal for the Huskies as she allowed just nine goals while making 15 saves for a .625 save percentage on the day. The senior led the team with five ground balls.

Trailing 7-6 after the first half, the Huskies defense kept Frostburg at bay for a scoreless third quarter by the Bobcats. Sitko got the Huskies on the board with 2:22 to play in the third to tie the game 7-7. Stressman gave the Huskies a 8-7 lead with 1:44 to play after winning the draw control. Stessman got the ball to Bruno who fed it back to Stressman for the lead.

Stressman gave the Huskies a 9-7 lead with 11:55 to play in regulation with her second goal of the day thanks to another assist by Bruno. The two-goal lead held for the Huskies until 6:35 to play in the fourth when Julia Badolato finished off a successful clear with her first goal of the game. After another Husky turnover, Camden DeMaio scored on a free-position shot when the Bobcats were playing a woman-down to tie the game at 9-9 with 3:57 to play in regulation.

Frostburg seemingly had the go-ahead goal with just over two minutes to play but it was called off and the Huskies completed a successful clear with 2:02 to go. The Huskies set up their offense and with time ticking off the shot clock, Bruno fed the ball into Simpson from behind the net and the sophomore won the one-on-one exchange in front of the cage to put Bloomsburg up 10-9. The game-winning goal was the first of her career with the Huskies.

The Bobcats won the ensuing draw control with less than a minute to play but turned the ball over in front of the cage and Sitko picked up the loose ball and held on for the final 19 seconds and Bloomsburg win.
Frostburg took the early lead in the game as Gianni Leonardi scored just a minute into the contest. The Huskies answered with back-to-back goals from Bruno and Simpson less than 30 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats and Huskies traded goals from Neila Haney and
Emily Gauker (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) before Frostburg went back-to-back with goals from Haney and DeMaio with 3:49 to play in the first.
Alexis Guzylak (Corning, N.Y./Horseheads) and Sitko scored back-to-back for the Huskies to end the high-scoring first quarter as Bloomsburg led 5-4.
The scoring slowed in the second quarter as Frostburg out-paced the Huskies 3-1 in the period. Bloomsburg got a goal from Bruno with 12:54 to play thanks to an assist from Sitko. The scoring in the second period gave Frostburg a 7-6 lead going into halftime.

Haney led all players with three goals for the Bobcats and Frostburg's goalie, Nicole Gray, took the loss in cage after making nine saves.
The Huskies return home for the first time in2 2025 when they host Jefferson at Steph Pettit Stadium on Wednesday, February 26 for a 2:00 p.m. game in Bloomsburg, Pa.
