Baseball Drops Saturday Twin Bill to Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team dropped both legs of its twin bill with Pitt-Johnstown, 6-3 and 3-2, at Point Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Bloomsburg (7-9) tallied nine hits on the day while Pitt-Johnstown recorded 16.

The Huskies' bullpen posted nine strikeouts on the day.

Game One – Pitt-Johnstown 6, Bloomsburg 3

The Mountain Cats got on the board early with an RBI-double from Erik Rhodes.

Bloomsburg was held hitless through the first two innings before a two-out single from Corey Daniels (Forest City, Pa./Forest City) gave the maroon and gold some momentum. After Ebbert reached on an error from the shortstop, Greg Cristino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) tallied his 14th RBI of the week on a single through the right side.

UPJ's Aidan Steinbugl put the home team back up ahead by two on an RBI-triple to left centerfield before being brought home on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1. The Mountain Cats tacked on another two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Huskies looked to rally in the seventh as Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and Daniels knocked back-to-back singles to the outfield with two outs. Ebbert then brought Balestrini home by putting a double off the wall in left field. An error from the Mountain Cats' third baseman allowed Cristino to reach base and score Daniels. Bloomsburg was unable to complete the comeback as they dropped game one, 6-3.

Matthew Marsten (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) (0-1) was pinned with the loss after allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out two in four innings.

Pitt-Johnstown's Ben Tomb (2-1) earned the win with four strikeouts and just one run in six innings.

Game Two – Pitt-Johnstown 3, Bloomsburg 2

The bats cooled off in game two as a UPJ recorded a pair of hits in the first four innings while keeping the Huskies hitless.

Pitt-Johnstown got on the board in the fifth as a single from Zac LeGars brought in the first run before a throwing error allowed a second runner to score.

Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) broke up Brian Pirone's no-hitter bid in the top of the seventh, keeping Bloomsburg alive with a two-run home run over the wall in left field to tie the game.

A dropped third strike in the bottom of the frame walked off the game for UPJ as Joey Maun beat out the throw to the plate.

Nolan Walker (North Wales, Pa./North Wales) was stuck with the loss in game two, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out four in 1.2 innings. Starter Pete Modrovsky (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) pitched five innings and allowed just one earned run and four hits.

Bloomsburg is back at Danny Litwhiler field on Wednesday, March 19 as it hosts Clarion at 3 p.m.
