Women's Lacrosse Falls on Last Second Goal to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Wildcats scored with seven seconds left in regulation to lift Wilmington to a 13-12 win over Bloomsburg, Saturday. The Huskies dropped to 4-3 on the year while the Wildcats improved to 4-3.
 
The Huskies trailed 12-9 with five minutes to play in regulation. After Wilmington won the draw control after its 12th goal, AnnMarie Davenport (Elkton, Md./Elkton) caused a turnover for the Huskies and the Huskies completed a successful clear to set up their offense. Emily Simpson (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) went to cage for her seventh goal of the year and cut the lead to 12-10 at the 4:59 mark. The Wildcats won the next draw control but Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) caused a turnover and got the ball back for Bloomsburg. After another successful clear, Mia Boccippio (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) got a pass from Mikayla Viola (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) to cut the lead to just one, 12-11, with 4:05 to play.
 
After a green card for the Wildcats with just over a minute to play, Kayla Stressman (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) tied the game for Bloomsburg with 49 seconds left thanks to an assist from Tori Bruno (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley). The Wildcats won the next draw and went straight to cage. After a foul was called against Bloomsburg, Alea Javorowsky got a path to the goal after a pass from Gia Boccio and scored with seven second to play to give Wilmington the lead, 13-12.

Bloomsburg called a timeout to set up its final play. Stressman won the final draw control but the Wildcat defense prevented the Huskies from getting the final shot off and Wilmington hung on for the 13-12 win.
 
Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored the game's first goal just 37 seconds into action for the early 1-0 Bloomsburg lead but Wilmington rattled off three-straight scores to take a 3-1 lead with 12:13 to play in the first. Stressman got her first of the game at the 8:21 mark before two more from Wilmington increased the Wildcats' lead to 5-2. Stressman scored the first period's final goal to cut the lead to 5-3.
 
The Wildcats and Huskies traded a pair of goals in the second period with Sitko recording the two goals for Bloomsburg as Wilmington carried a 7-5 lead into halftime.
 
Mia Boccippio (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) opened the second-half's scoring with her sixth of the season just 52 seconds into action. The Wildcats answered with back-to-back goals to push their lead to 9-6 with 7:55 to play in the third. Bloomsburg tied the game for the first time with three-straight from Reiley Knize (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), Sitko, and Stressman as the game was knotted at 9-9 with 3:16 to play in the quarter.
 
The Wildcats broke the tied with three-straight of their own, one in the final minute of the third and two to start the fourth to take a 12-9 lead with 6:49 to play. The Huskies three goals in the final five minutes set up Wilmington's game-winning goal with seven seconds to play.
 
Sitko and Stressman led the team with four goals each while Stressman won a team-best 10 draw controls. Boccippio finished the day with a pair of goals while Simpson and Knize each had a tally.
 
Defensively, Davenport led Bloomsburg with three caused turnovers while Emily Gauker (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) finished the day with two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Foley led the team with five ground balls and had a pair of caused turnovers.
 
Foley finished the day with seven saves in cage the Huskies.

Bloomsburg gets back to PSAC East action on Wednesday when the Huskies travel to Shippensburg for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
