Baseball Bested in Doubleheader by Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team dropped both legs of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader against No. 30 Shippensburg at Fairchild Field on Saturday afternoon.

Mike Miller (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Corey Daniels (Forest City, Pa./Forest City) each finished the day with three hits while Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara), Ben Jones (Fallschurch, Va./George C. Marshall) and Anthony Trommer (Trevose, Pa./Neshaminy) posted two hits each. Overall, the Huskies recorded 14 hits on the day.

Game One – Shippensburg 4, Bloomsburg 1

After a scoreless first inning, Jacob Reifer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia Area) put Bloomsburg (9-12, 1-3 PSAC East) on the board with a sacrifice bunt to score Wilson.

A two-out, two-RBI double to left field put Shippensburg (16-7, 3-1) ahead in the bottom of the frame.

The Raiders shut down the Huskies in the next two innings before back-to-back, solo home runs extended the home teams' lead to 4-1. Shippensburg held on to its lead to take the win in game one.

Brock Hammaker (Lancaster, Pa./Donegal) picked up the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Shippensburg's J.T. Weaver earned his fifth win of the season in a six-inning effort.

Game Two – Shippensburg 9, Bloomsburg 4

The Raiders jumped ahead early in the nightcap, scoring four runs in a two-out rally.

Bloomsburg responded in the top of the second as Daniels sent a single out to left field allowing Judah Miller (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) to turn towards home. The cut-off throw by the Raiders' third baseman pulled the catcher off the plate and allowing J. Miller to score.

A pair of RBI-doubles in the bottom of the second pushed Shippensburg ahead 6-1.

The maroon and gold were held off the board until the fifth inning when Jones grounded a single back to the pitcher. The pitcher then sent an errant throw to first, advancing all runners and scoring M. Miller. A sacrifice fly from Trommer scored Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) before a Daniels single brought Jones across the plate to make it 6-4.

A ground-rule double in the bottom of the inning scored the seventh run of the day for Shippensburg before a bringing two more runs home in the sixth to secure a 9-4 victory for the Raiders.

Pete Modrovsky (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) was tabbed with the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in two innings pitched. Matthew Marsten (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) allowed one run on four hits in 2.2 innings while Brian Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) allowed a pair of runs in 1.1 innings.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Friday, March 28 as they head to No. 12 East Stroudsburg for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
