Baseball Defeats St. Thomas Aquinas at Home, 7-4

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team downed St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-4, in a non-conference contest at Danny Litwhiler Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Six Huskies tallied hits in the contest, with Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) notching a pair of singles on the day. Corey Daniels (Forest City, Pa./Forest City) finished the day 1-for-1 with a home run while drawing four walks.

Bloomsburg (10-16) jumped ahead early with four runs in the bottom of the first. After Daniels lead off with a walk, Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) brought the centerfielder home on a single to right field. Wilson made it to second base on a dropped fly ball to deep left field. A wild pitch allowed Balestrini to put the Huskies ahead 2-0. An error from the Spartans first baseman gave Wilson and Reifer time to add two more runs and advance the lead to 4-0.

St. Thomas Aquinas (7-19) responded in the top of the second, scoring a pair of runs to pull within two. A double steal in the top of the third brought in the third run of the contest for the Spartans.

Defense stood tall over the next two innings before a solo home run to centerfield from Daniels extended the Bloomsburg lead. Later in the frame Wilson sent a two-RBI single up the middle to put the Huskies ahead 7-3.

St. Thomas Aquinas managed to record one run in the ninth but couldn't manage the comeback as the maroon and gold held on for the 7-4 win.

Brian Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) picked up the win, striking out ten batters while allowing just two earned runs. Walsh threw 109 pitches across six innings and posted the most strikeouts in a single game for the Huskies since Jared Marshman struck out 11 in against Fairmont State on March 5. Travis Peden (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) pitched two innings of relief and allowed just two hits and one run.

The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Huskies before they return to conference play for a conference doubleheader at Millersville on Thursday, April 3 at 12 p.m.
