Lacrosse Honors its Seniors; Huskies Fall to Shippensburg 12-10 on Saturday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg lacrosse team played through rain drops on Saturday as they honored their six seniors prior to the game against Shippensburg. The Raiders held on for a 12-10 win after a closely battled contest.
 
Prior to the game, Bloomsburg honored Mia Boccippio (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), Tori Bruno (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), Maya Fulmer (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), Abby Seifert (Laurel, N.Y./Mattituck), and Sophia Zelasko (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) for their dedication over the last four years.
 
Boccippio led the Huskies with two goals and an assist while Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) had a goal and pair of assists. Sitko picked up two ground balls and won three draw controls. Emily Simpson (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) had a goal and an assist while she and Kayla Stressman (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) led the team with four draw controls each. Alexis Guzylak (Corning, N.Y./Horseheads) finished the day with a goal and an assist while picking up three ground balls and had two caused turnovers.
 
Defensively, Guzylak, Mikayla Viola (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus), and Sophie Mellman (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) had two caused turnovers. Viola and Guzylak and AnnMarie Davenport (Elkton, Md./Elkton) led the Huskies with three ground balls each.

Foley finished the day with 13 saves for the Huskies.
 
The Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes of action before Samantha Keck (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) got the Huskies on the board with her second goal of the season at the 2:30 mark. Just 39 seconds later, Olivia Glinski scored the Raiders' first women-down goal to give Shippensburg a 4-1 lead with 1:51 to play. Boccippio scored her first of the game with just seven seconds left in the quarter to cut the lead to one, 4-3, at the end of the first 15 minutes.
 
Sitko opened the scoring in the second with her 36th of the season before Shippensburg scored back-to-back goals to push their lead to 6-3 with 4:14 to play before halftime, including their second player-down goal. Boccippio and Sara Vosburg traded goals to end the half as Shippensburg went into the break leading 7-4.
 
Emily Simpson (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) kicked off the third with her 12th of the season before Maddie Phommachanh scored the Raiders' third woman-down goal with 10:46 to play for the 8-5 Shippensburg lead. Emily Gauker (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Reiley Knize (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the third to cut the Shippensburg lead to 8-7 with 5:16 to play. Vosburg answered to push the lead back to two, 9-7at the end of the third. She scored to start the fourth to push the lead back to three, 10-7, but Stressman answered to get the Huskies back to within two, 10-8, with 12:49 to play. Ali Pioli and Jamie Carvin sandwiched a pair of goals for the Raiders around one from Fulmer and Guzylak as Shippensburg held on for the 12-10 win.
 
The Huskies out-shot Shippensburg 39-30 and held a 21-17 advantage in ground balls. The Huskies won the draw control battle 15-11 as well.
 
Bloomsburg returns to action on Wednesday when the Huskies host East Stroudsburg at 2:00 p.m. at Steph Pettit Stadium.
