CLARION, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team fell on the road to Clarion, 17-8, in a non-conference contest at Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, April 29.
Â
Corey Daniels (Forest City, Pa./Forest City) led Bloomsburg (20-25) with a three-hit performance, including an inside-the-park grand slam in the top of the fourth.
Mike Miller (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh),
Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and
Anthony Trommer (Trevose, Pa./Neshaminy) each notched a pair of hits in the game.
Â
The first inning saw both sides combined for just 16 total pitches in a pair of 1-2-3 innings.
Â
Clarion (21-24) recorded the first hit of the game with a lead-off single up the middle from Randy Carlo on the first pitch. Caden Contant took the next pitch deep, launching a two-run home run to left center.
Â
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 9-0 in the third, scoring seven runs on four hits.
Â
Bloomsburg responded in the top of the fourth as Miller singled through the left side to lead off the inning. A double down the left field line from
Greg Cristino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) put both runners in scoring position. Balestrini brought in the first run of the game for the Huskies on an RBI-groundout to second.
Â
Jacob Reifer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia Area) then drew a walk before a sacrifice fly from
Josh Wilson (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) put the second run on the board for the maroon and gold. A pair of walks from
Nathan Kress (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) and Trommer loaded the bases for Daniels.
Â
On a 2-1 count, Daniels lined a shot past the left fielder and all the way to the wall. The graduate student was quick out of the batter's box and quickly rounded the bases to beat out the throw at home for an inside-the-park grand slam. It is not the first time that the rare feat has been achieved by the Huskies. The last inside-the-park grand slam for the Huskies was hit nearly 13 years ago to the day as Tim Ravel hit an inside-the-park grand slam against West Chester on April 27, 2012.
Â
Clarion tacked on its' tenth run of the game in the bottom of the inning before the let up over the next two innings. A sacrifice fly in the seventh from Reifer scored Cristino to pull Bloomsburg within three.
Â
An unearned run from Brody Hinkle moved the score to 11-7 before Trommer scored in the eighth on a groundout by Ebbert.
Â
The Golden Eagles pulled away in the bottom of the eighth, scoring six runs on one hit and four errors. Clarion went on to close out the contest and pick up the 17-8 victory.
