Women's Basketball Falls on the Road to Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team dropped a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest to Kutztown, 44-34, inside the Keystone Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Kelly Leszcynski (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) led the scoring for Bloomsburg (9-7, 5-5 PSAC) as the guard recorded nine points while notching a career-high six steals. The redshirt-junior went 2-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Alison Hatajik (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) went 4-for-9 to finish with eight points while hauling in seven rebounds. As a team, the Huskies went 11-for-47 (23.4 percent) from the floor.

It took over three and a half minutes for the first points of the contest to be recorded as Bella Quinn sank a jumper to give Kutztown (10-6, 6-3) a 2-0 lead. The scoring struggles continued for both sides until the final two minutes of the opening half, as Olivia Selverian (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) tied the contest with a jumper of her own. A pair of layups saw the Golden Bears move ahead before Ava Stevenson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) moved the score to 6-4 with a long two in the final seconds of the frame.

Hatajik tied the contest 85 seconds into the second quarter, banking in a turnaround jumper. Kutztown responded with a layup from Olivia Smelas to regain the lead. Trailing 12-8 in the final minutes of the half, a pair of free throws and a three-pointer from Leszcynski put Bloomsburg up. The Golden Bears surged late, finishing the quarter on an eight-point run to lead 20-13 at halftime.

After being held to just three points of free-throws in the third quarter, Bloomsburg looked to cut down on a 35-16 Kutztown lead.  The Huskies opened the fourth-quarter scoring with two free throws from Leszcynski. After giving up a layup, Bloomsburg quickly answer with a three-pointer from Maddie LaFrance (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). The triple kicked off an 11-0 run the pulled the visitors within eight with under five minutes to play. The Huskies were unable to close the gap any further, dropping the game 44-34.

Bloomsburg is back in action on Wednesday, January 21 as they host Mansfield at 5:30 p.m. for the PSAC 75th Anniversary Celebration game.
