Maynard's Career-Night Lifts Women's Basketball to 65-57 Victory over Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team started the new year in the win column, defeating Slippery Rock, 65-57, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest inside the Morrow Field House on Friday afternoon.

A breakout performance from Maddison Maynard (Lansford, Pa./Panther Valley) helped propel Bloomsburg (6-5, 2-3 PSAC) to victory. The sophomore led the team with 22 points and 17 rebounds, setting career-highs in both categories. Alison Hatajik (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Leah Kale (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) each finished with 10 points on the day, with Hatajik notching 12 rebounds to complete the double-double. The Huskies shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the floor, its second-best shooting percentage so far this season. Slippery Rock shot 30.5 percent (18-for-59) on the night.

Maynard got Bloomsburg on the board first, going coast to coast for a tur around jumper in the paint. The Rock tied the contest on the next possession with a pair of free throws. It took a minute and a half for either side to score again as Ava Stevenson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) gave Bloomsburg the lead with a fastbreak layup. The Huskies notched five more layups in the first quarter, holding a 14-11 lead after ten minutes of play.

The second half saw Maynard get on the board early, recording four points off layups in the opening 86 seconds of the frame. The Huskies went on to control the second frame, outscoring the host team 15-9 in the second quarter to take a 29-20 lead into half time.

The second half started with quick scoring from both sides. An early layup from SRU was quickly responded to by Maynard with a layup of her own. Bloomsburg slowly extended its lead to 14 points with 1:25 to go in the frame. A late surge from Slippery Rock cut the lead to seven entering the fourth quarter.

Bloomsburg regained its double-digit lead two minutes into the fourth quarter with a three pointer from Kale. The Huskies managed to hold off the host team, 65-57, to pick up the victory.

Bloomsburg is right back in action on Saturday, January 3 as they take on Edinboro at 1 p.m.
