Men's Basketball Outlasts Shippensburg in Thrilling 71-67 Victory

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's basketball team took down Shippensburg, 71-67, in a thrilling Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup inside the Nelson Field House on Wednesday night.

Bloomsburg (3-9, 1-6 PSAC) went 26-for-59 (44.1 percent) from the floor while going 8-for-15 (53.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Shippensburg (6-7, 1-5) shot 41.9 percent (26-for-62) from the floor and went 4-for-16 from three-point territory.

Ries Naugle (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had another stellar performance for the Huskies, posting 19 points while going a perfect three for three beyond the arc. The redshirt freshman also went six for six from the free-throw line. Naugle posted 15 points in the first half and finished the night just short of a double-double on the night, tallying nine rebounds.

Thaddeus Lee (Lancaster, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) posted a career-high 18 points in Wednesday night's victory, going 8-for-9 with a pair of threes. 16 of Lee's 18 points came in the second half. The Lancaster-native hauled in seven rebounds as well.

RJ Young (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) fell short of the double-double, posting a career-high nine points and nine rebounds. Chase Smucker (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Kodi Johnson (Folcroft, Pa./Phelps School) each recorded eight points.

An early foul sent Shippensburg's Jaydon Smith to the line just 14 seconds in to give the Raiders the early 2-0 lead. Smith quickly got the ball back and hit a mid-range jumper to extend the lead to four points 51 seconds in. After a series of misses from both sides, a tipin layup Naugle put the Huskies on the board. Naugle drained an off-balance three two minutes later to tie the game at seven.

Bloomsburg kept pace with Shippensburg throughout the remainder of the half, keeping SU within two possessions. The maroon and gold went into the locker room at halftime trailing 41-38.

The second half saw Shippensburg slowly pull ahead to a 53-43 lead with just under 15 minutes to play. Lee's first three-pointer kickstarted a comeback for the Huskies as the freshman went on to score 14 of the Huskies next 18 points to tie the game at 63 with just over five minutes to play. A tipin layup from Xion Nichols (Woodland, Ca./State College Area) gave the Huskies its first lead of the second half with four to play. Timely free throw makes from Camden Glass (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls), Naugle and Nichols helped to close out the game, 71-67.

The victory marks back-to-back victories at home against the Raiders for Bloomsburg following last season's 89-78 win inside Nelson Field House. The last time the Huskies won back-to-back games at home against SU was a pair of victories on February 8, 2014 and November 11, 2014.

Bloomsburg looks to continue its success at home on Friday, January 9 as they host Cheyney at 6 p.m.
