Men's Basketball Holds On for 73-67 Overtime Win Over Cheyney

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's basketball team picked up its second win at home, taking down Cheyney, 73-67, in a non-conference matchup inside the Nelson Field House on Friday night.

A strong second half for Bloomsburg (4-9) helped lift the Huskies to victory over Cheyney (2-10), going 12-for-29 (41.38 percent) from the floor. The maroon and gold recorded eight threes in the contest, with five in the second half. Cheyney shot 26-for-67 (38.8 percent) on the night while recording 10 three-pointers.

Four Huskies recorded double-digit points, including Courtney Davis II (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) who tallied a career-high 17 points. Davis went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and posted three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Thaddeus Lee (Lancaster, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) went 5-for-9 to finish with 12 points while hauling in six rebounds and two steals. Xion Nichols (Woodland, Ca./State College Area) and Kaaba Murray (Harrisburg, Pa./Skyline Prep) each finished with 11 points, combining for four three-pointers and six made free throws.

It took over two minutes for the scoring to open up in the contest, sinking a free-throw. The Wolves responded with mid-range jumper to take a 2-1 lead. From there, the two sides continued to go back-and-forth until a pair of threes from Cheyney put the visitors ahead 18-10 with 8:27 remaining in the half. The remainder of the frame saw the two sides trade short scoring runs until the halftime break as the Wolves took a 35-28 lead into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, Davis pulled the Huskies within three on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws. Later in the frame, Ries Naugle (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) drove through the paint and threw down a dunk to kickstart a 9-0 scoring run that saw Bloomsburg take the lead with ten to play. Cheyney regained the lead but the Huskies kept within two possessions until regaining the lead with four to play.

A layup from the Wolves's Naadir Wood put the visitors up 58-57 with three minutes left but Lee answered the call, draining a triple 15 seconds later to go ahead 60-58. A free throw from Nichols put the maroon and gold up three before Cheyney's Clyde Frasier tied the game with 33 seconds left in regulation. Nichols drew a foul with eight seconds left and sank a pair of free throws to put Bloomsburg up 63-61. A missed three-pointer with two seconds left ended up in the hands of Frasier yet again, who got a layup off with .1 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

It was all Bloomsburg in the overtime frame as Naugle recorded six of the Huskies ten points in the frame. The Huskies held on to win 73-67.

Bloomsburg is back in action on Tuesday, January 13 as they head to East Stroudsburg for a 7:30 PM contest against the Warriors.
