Women's Basketball Overthrows the Golden Rams 58-52

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Bloomsburg women's basketball team toppled West Chester 58-52.

The team was led by Kelly Leszcynski (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and Maddison Maynard (Lansford, Pa./Panther Valley) with 14 points each. Maynard led the team in rebounds with nine. Alison Hatajik (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) also scored in double digits with 13 points. Leah Kale (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and Lex Ferguson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) ended the game scoring six and two respectively. Ava Stevenson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) was the only player off of the bench to score with nine points.

First Half:

Neither team scored in the first three minutes in the game until Leszcynski drained a three to open the flood gates. West Chester started to go on a run after being down 5-0 early. They scored nine straight points to give the Golden Rams a four-point lead. Ferguson ended the 9-0 run with a tip in. The Golden Rams then brought the lead up to 14-7 with 19 seconds left in the first quarter. Maynard ended the quarter with a late layup to make it a 14-9 game.

The second quarter was dominated by the duo of Maynard and Stevenson. After Maynard brought the lead down to three with a pair of free throws, Stevenson made a three-point shot to tie the game 18-18. West Chester hit a three of their own, but Maynard would shoot another pair of free throws. The Golden Rams then hit a jumper, but Stevenson came back with another good shot from behind the arc, making it a tie game. Maynard tagged in with a good layup, but West Chester fired back with a jumper. Kale then made her own three pointer to bring the lead back in the Huskies' favor. The first half ended with the Huskies up 28-27.

Second Half:

The back-and-forth ballgame continued with both teams trading shots to reclaim the lead. Bloomsburg then hit back-to-back threes from Leszcynski and Stevenson to put the Huskies on top 39-34. Hatajik ended the quarter with a layup, but the Golden Rams made a shot late in the quarter to end it 43-40.

The final quarter started with the Huskies keeping their momentum with a Leszcynski three ball. Halfway into the quarter, West Chester went on a 5-0 run to bring the lead within one. This would be the closest that West Chester could get in this quarter as the duo of Hatajik and Leszcynski shut the door on the Golden Rams. The game ended with the Huskies on top 58-52.

On the Horizon:

The Huskies will return home to face Kutztown on Feb. 14. Tip off will be at 1 p.m.
