BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg tied the game late in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but Frostburg State escaped with a 14-13 victory Saturday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium.
Bloomsburg (1-2) placed seven players in the scoring column, led by three goals apiece from
Delaney Fox (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) and
Alexis Guzylak (Corning, N.Y./Horseheads), but Frostburg State (1-1) controlled the opening draw of overtime and scored at the 3:33 mark to seal the decision.
Frostburg struck first just 1:10 into the contest and added a second goal midway through the period to take a 2-1 edge.
Emily Gauker (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) answered with an unassisted finish to tie the game at 1-1, and Guzylak converted a woman-up opportunity off a feed from
Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) to even the score at 2-2.
After Frostburg regained a one-goal lead, Guzylak found the back of the net again with 3:34 remaining in the quarter, knotting the score at 3-3 heading into the second.
The Bobcats opened the second with a quick goal, but Bloomsburg responded immediately as Fox finished off a pass from
Emily Simpson (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) just seven seconds later to make it 4-4.
Fox then sparked a 3-0 Huskies run, converting two free-position attempts and finishing another chance in front to give Bloomsburg its largest lead of the half at 6-4. Frostburg answered with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 6-6, but the Huskies closed the half on top when Sitko buried a woman-up goal with 1:03 remaining for a 7-6 advantage at the break.
Bloomsburg carried its momentum into the third, as
Reiley Knize (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) converted a free-position attempt to push the lead to 8-6. After Frostburg trimmed the margin to one, Guzylak connected off an assist from Fox to make it 9-7, and
Emily Simpson (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) later finished off a feed from
Callie Love-Morris (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) to extend the lead to 10-8.
Sitko added her second man-up goal of the afternoon at the 5:43 mark, giving Bloomsburg an 11-9 cushion. Frostburg responded with a late tally to cut the deficit to 11-10 entering the fourth.
Brianna Austin (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) struck just 21 seconds into the final period to put Bloomsburg up 12-10. Frostburg capitalized on back-to-back man-up opportunities to even the contest at 12-12, then took its first lead since the second quarter with 9:32 remaining.
With the game tied at 13-13 after Austin's second goal of the quarter at the 3:10 mark, both teams traded late chances.
Samantha Keck (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) rang a shot off the post in the closing minutes, and Bloomsburg's defense forced key turnovers to keep the game level at the end of regulation.
Frostburg secured the draw to open the extra session and maintained possession before converting at 3:33 to escape with the 14-13 victory.
Bloomsburg finished with 27 shots and held a 16-13 advantage in draw controls. The Huskies also converted three of four free-position attempts in the contest.

Sitko led the Huskies with six draw controls while Knize and Simpson each added four.

Defensively,
AnnMarie Davenport (Elkton, Md./Elkton) led the Huskies with three caused turnovers and three ground balls while
Mikayla Viola (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) and
Natalie Drake (Worcester, Pa./Methacton) each picked up two.

Emily Graham (Wantagh, N.Y./St. Anthony's) started in cage for the Huskies and made five saves in 50:28 while Drake allowed just the one goal in the final 10:59.

Bloomsburg returns to action next week looking to rebound from the one-goal overtime setback. The Huskies will host Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m.
