WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Bloomsburg showed resilience and flashes of offensive efficiency but fell on the road at West Chester, 23-7, in PSAC East action Saturday afternoon.
West Chester opened the contest with a decisive scoring run, netting five goals in just over four minutes to take an early 5-0 lead. The Golden Rams capitalized on early possessions and transition opportunities, but Bloomsburg settled in and responded with a composed offensive stretch.
Emily Simpson (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) got the Huskies on the board off a feed from
Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), and Sitko followed with an unassisted finish to cut the deficit to 5-2.
West Chester added a late goal to close the first quarter and carried that momentum into the second, pushing its lead to 7-2 early in the period. Bloomsburg answered again, as Simpson connected with Sitko for her second goal of the game, continuing a strong offensive rhythm between the pair.
After trading goals, West Chester used another key run midway through the second quarter, scoring three times in a four-minute stretch to extend its advantage. Bloomsburg responded with one of its most efficient sequences of the game.
Brianna Austin (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) converted while playing a player down off a pass from
Alexis Guzylak (Corning, N.Y./Horseheads), and
Delaney Fox (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) added a goal late in the half from
Kayla Stressman (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) to keep the Huskies within striking distance at halftime.
The Golden Rams created separation late in the second quarter with a quick three-goal burst in the final 90 seconds, turning a competitive stretch into a 13-5 lead at the break.
Out of halftime, West Chester continued its momentum with a four-goal run in the third quarter, building its lead to 17-5. Despite the surge, Bloomsburg's defense continued to compete, with goalkeeper
Emily Graham (Wantagh, N.Y./St. Anthony's) making key stops throughout the stretch and finishing with 10 saves on the afternoon.
Bloomsburg continued to battle in the fourth quarter, generating offensive opportunities and breaking through twice.
Alexis Guzylak (Corning, N.Y./Horseheads) scored off a feed from Austin, and Sitko added her second goal of the game late in the period. West Chester answered with multiple runs in the quarter, including a three-goal stretch midway through, but the Huskies maintained their effort through the final whistle.
Sitko led the Huskies with four points on two goals and two assists, while Simpson added two goals. Guzylak (one goal, one assist) and Austin (one goal, one assist) contributed to a balanced offensive effort.
Bloomsburg finished 13-of-20 on clears and won 12 draw controls, with Simpson and
Reiley Knize (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) leading the effort. The Huskies also put 10 of their 14 shots on goal, showing efficiency in their scoring chances against one of the top teams in the PSAC East.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday when they host Millersville in a key PSAC East matchup at 2:00 p.m. at Steph Pettit Stadium.
