Softball Sweeps Double Header Against Bowie State

WASHINGTON D.C. - The Bloomsburg softball team swept the series against Bowie State. The team had a total of 17 hits with 15 runs.

Last week's PSAC Atheltes of the Week, Sarah Yamrick (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) and Allie Wenrich (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin), both had great games. Yamrick pitched in the first game, striking out 13 batters and picking up the win. Offensively, she had one hit and two RBIs in total. Wenrich had three hits, led in RBIs with three and a home-run.

Game one - Bloomsburg 7, Bowie State 5

The game started out slow with neither team scoring until the top of the fourth inning. Josie Straigis (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) got on base from a Bowie State error. Reagan Wiest (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) grounded out on a sacrifice bunt to put Straigis to second. Alizabeth Schuler (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) got to second base after an error from one of Bowie State's infielders, which resulted in Straigis advancing to third. Carly Wywoda (Dupont, Pa./Holy Cross) then brought Stragis home with a sacrifice fly, advancing Schuler. Emma Holmes (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern Senior) singled to center field to bring Schuler home to end the fourth inning 2-0.

The Bulldogs tied it up 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth after two runners scored from a wild pitch.

Yamrick started the fifth by getting walked, but Wenrich stepped up to the plate to hit an RBI single toward center field. Schuler also hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to bring Wenrich home to make it 4-2.

The Bulldogs took the Huskies into extra innings as they tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. With Wywoda placed on second, Fisher singled to advance Wywoda to third base. Holmes then blasted one to center field to earn a two-RBI double. Yamrick gave the Huskies an insurance run after flying out to center field, allowing Holmes to score.

Bowie State did score with an RBI single, but could not come back and the game ended 7-5.

Game two - Bloomsburg 8, Bowie State 7

With Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) on first, Wenrich brought the power by hitting one out of the park to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs fought back with a score of their own, ending the first inning 2-1.

Bowie State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second after a passed ball. No one scored until the top of the fourth where the Huskies regained the lead. Schuler singled one to right and Gabby Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) singled on a bunt to put two Huskies on base. Holmes loaded the bases up with a single in the area of the third baseman. Kranzley then got on base thanks to a Bowie State error, allowing Schuler to score. Yamrick would single to center field to earn a two-RBI single, making it 5-3.

With Straigis on first, Schuler cracked one to right field to earn an RBI double. Kranzley hit Schuler home later in the inning on a ground out, making it 7-3 after the top of the fifth. Straigis then scored again in the top of the sixth after the Bulldogs threw a passed ball.

Straigis held onto the lead and the Huskies took an 8-7 victory and swept the afternoon's series.

On the Horizon:
