Baseball Scores 18 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep Over Penn State-Berks

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team recorded 18 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep over Penn State-Berks on Sunday afternoon.
 
Bloomsburg (6-1) saw hits from ten different batters with five recording multiple hits on the day. Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) led the team with five runs, three hits, three RBIs, seven stolen bases and a home run. Mike Miller (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) opened the scoring in game two with a three-run home run and posted four RBIs and two runs on the day. Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy), Jeremy Stine (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), Matt Freda (Lafayette, N.J./High Point Regional) and Dylan Hirsh (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) each finished the day with two hits.
 
Game One – Bloomsburg 5, Penn State-Berks 2
 
Penn State-Berks (0-5) got on the board first in the second inning as an RBI-double from Michael DeRichie scored Bryce Kelly before being DeRichie was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple. The Nittany Lions extended their lead to 2-0 on an RBI-single to right field from Carsen Brey.
 
Russo drew a walk in the bottom of the third before stealing second and advancing to third on an error. This set the centerfield up to easily score on an RBI-groundout from Balestrini.
 
Bloomsburg recorded its first hit of the contest in the bottom of the fifth as Anthony Tromer led off the inning with a single up the middle. Back-to-back walks from Freda and Jace Jarmon (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Central) loaded the bases before Russo was hit by a pitch to tie the game at 2-2. Balestrini gave the Huskies the lead on an RBI groundout to score Freda before Hirsh made it 5-2 on a two-RBI single through the left side.
 
The Huskies held off the Nittany Lions in the final two frames to take the victory 5-2.
 
Landon Lorson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) tabbed his second win of the year, pitching three scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts in the latter half of the game. Brandon Wozniak (Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke Area) got the start for the maroon and gold, allowing one unearned run and two total across three innings of work.
 
Game One – Bloomsburg 13, Penn State-Berks 3
 
Mike Miller (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) got Bloomsburg's scoring started early in game two, launching a massive three-run home run over the right field fence.
 
The second frame saw Jeremy Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Pittston Area) and Freda tally back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. A walk to Jarmon set up Russo for an RBI-single to centerfield. A sacrifice fly from Balestrini in the subsequent at bat gave the maroon and gold a 5-0 lead.
 
Bloomsburg continued to pile on the runs throughout the contest, including the three-run fifth inning that gave the home team a double-digit lead. the frame saw back-to-back RBI-double from Balestrini and Hirsh before an RBI-groundout from Miller made it 12-0.
 
Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) posted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Huskies their final run of the day.
 
Andrew Seibert ended Bloomsburg's shutout bid in the seventh with a three-run home run to make it 13-3.
 
Andrew Armstrong (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) picked up the win on the mound for the Huskies, posting five strikeouts and no runs in four innings of work. The Bloomsburg bullpen combined for five strikeouts and just two hits across the final three innings of the game.
 
The maroon and gold return to action on Monday, March 9 as they look to complete the series sweep against Penn State-Berks at 11 a.m.
