Baseball Completes Series Sweep Over Penn State Berks With 11-2 Victory

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – An eight-run fourth inning lifted the Bloomsburg baseball team to a series sweep over Penn State-Berks with an 11-2 victory at Bloomsburg High School on Monday afternoon.

Bloomsburg (7-1) tallied 16 hits on the day with five different Huskies tallying multiple hits on the day. Casey O'Brien (Moosic, Pa./Riverside) led the team with three hits on the day, including an inside-the-park-home run in the fourth. Dylan Hirsh (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) went 2-for-3 on the day with two runs and three RBIs. Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) recorded a pair of doubles on the day.

Defensively, the Huskies held Penn State-Berks (0-6) to just five hits and two runs,

The two sides remained scoreless until the bottom of third as Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) led off with a bunt-single down the rightfield line. Russo then stole second and third before being brought home on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Hirsh (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury).

O'Brien started the bottom of the fourth with a bunt-single of his own before stealing second during the subsequent at-bat. Jeremy Stine (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) earned a trip to first after being hit by a pitch. Back-to-back RBI-singles from Jace Jarmon (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Central) and Matt Freda (Lafayette, N.J./High Point Regional) extended the lead for the Huskies before a sacrifice-fly from Russo scored Jarmon to make it 4-0.

Balestrini and Hirsh notched a pair of two-out doubles, with the latter's bringing another two runs across the plate. After a pitching change for the Nittany Lions, Mike Miller (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) blasted a two-run home run over the wall in right-center. O'Brien answered with a drive down the right field line that trickled all the way to the wall, allowing the third baseman to score an inside-the park-home run despite a stumble at first.

Bloomsburg tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI-single from O'Brien.

The seventh saw Penn State-Berks break the shutout with an RBI-single and a sacrifice fly to score its only runs of the contest.

Stine brought the final run of the game across the plate in the eighth, scoring Nathan Kress (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) from second base.

The former PSAC East Pitcher of the Week, Aiden Murphy (Mountaintop, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), posted another impressive day on the bump with four strikeouts and just one hit to claim the win. Across his six innings on the mound, the senior did not leave a runner on base as sole hit saw Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) throw out Andrew Siebert at second in attempt to stretch his hit into a double.

Brian Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) pitched one inning of relief in the eighth as he struck out the side.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Saturday, March 14 as they travel to Seton Hill for a four-game series with the Griffins. First pitch for the Saturday doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
