Baseball Drops Tightly-Contested Doubleheader to Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team saw dropped a pair of tightly-contested of contests in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cooper Park on Friday afternoon.

Bloomsburg (17-12, 6-8 PSAC East) posted nine hits on the day with Matt Freda (Lafayette, N.J./High Point Regional), Dylan Hirsh (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Casey O'Brien (Moosic, Pa./Riverside) each recording two hits on the day. Despite getting on base three times via a hit by pitch, Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) saw his hitting streak come to an end at 15-games.

Game One – Millersville 3, Bloomsburg 2

The Huskies got things started in the first inning as Russo got hit in his first plate appearance. A single through the left side from Freda and a sacrifice bunt from Hirsh moved Russo onto third. Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) drove in the game's opening run on an RBI-groundout to second base.

A leadoff double from Jarmon in the third set himself up to score on centerfield single later in the inning from Hirsh.

Bloomsburg stood tall defensively for much of the contest, holding Millersville (23-10, 8-6) to just three hits entering the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff double from Marco Pulizzi gave the Marauders some momentum as the centerfield then advanced to third on a wild pitch. A four-pitch walk put runners on the corners before sacrifice bunt broke up the shutout to score Pulizzi.

With runners on first and second, a fielding error denied an attempt at the double play and allowed Donis Rodriguez to tie the game. Xavier Smith proved to be the hero for Millersville, walking off the game with a single to left centerfield.

Brandon Wozniak (Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke Area) was given a no decision after allowing no runs and three hits across five innings. The sophomore notched four strikeouts on the day. Landon Lorson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) was tacked with the loss after 1.1 innings of work.

Game Two – Millersville 2, Bloomsburg 1

It was Millersville who struck first in the night cap as Rodriguez sent a double to left center. Rodriguez stole third before Matthew Williams walked to put runners on the corners. A balk brought in the first run of the day before an eventual RBI-groundout gave Millersville a 2-0 lead.

The Huskies responded in the top of the second as Casey O'Brien (Moosic, Pa./Riverside), Joe Levis (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Freda all tallied single in the frame. It was Freda's single up the middle that allowed O'Brien to score for the maroon and gold.

Bloomsburg's best chance to level the score came in the fifth inning as Russo was thrown out at home on a right field single from Hirsh.

The Marauders held on for the 2-1 win to sweep the twin bill.

Andrew Armstrong (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) tossed a complete game, striking out three while allowing two runs on four hits.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, April 11 as they host the Marauders on Senior Day in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
