Game Two Walk-Off Caps Off Senior Day Sweep Over Millersville

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team celebrated Senior Day by picking up a sweep in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader at Danny Litwhiler Field on Saturday afternoon.

Ten different Huskies recorded hits on the day with Jace Jarmon (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Central), Dylan Hirsh (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Casey O'Brien (Moosic, Pa./Riverside) and Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) each notching two base hits. O'Brien and Hirsh each posted three RBIs on the day. Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) went 2-for-3 on the day while earning six free trips to first on five hit by pitches and a walk.

Game One – Bloomsburg 6, Millersville 2

The opener remained deadlocked at zero entering the bottom of the third before a leadoff single from Jarmon breathed some life into the Bloomsburg (19-12, 8-8 PSAC East). Russo then reached on a bunt single before advancing to second on a throw to third base. Freda drove in the first score of the game in the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly.

Millersville (23-12, 8-8) took the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-RBI single from Sammy Laux.

The bottom of the fourth saw the Huskies responded early, drawing two walks before an RBI-single down the left filed line from Mike Miller (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) tied the game at 2-2. A sacrifice bunt from Jarmon brought Joe Levis (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) in from third to take the lead.

Back-to-back hit by pitches from Russo and Freda loaded the bases for Hirsh who drove a two-RBI single into right field to give the Huskies a 5-2 advantage.

O'Brien scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to give the maroon and gold and extra insurance run as they held on to take the opening game, 6-2.

Aiden Murphy (Mountain Top, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) went the distance to pick up his sixth win of the season while striking out eight. The senior allowed just four hits and two runs on the day.

Game Two – Bloomsburg 10, Millersville 9

Russo led off the bottom of the first by reaching first on a hit by pitch. A single from Freda moved Russo over to second before a double down the right field line scored Russo from second. Back-to-back RBI-groundouts extended the Bloomsburg lead to 3-0 after an inning of play.

Millersville took over the lead in the top of the second, scoring four off a hit and an error. The visitors tacked on another run in the sixth, this time on a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Kirk.

Walks to Balestrini and Jeremy Stine (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) chased a pair of Marauders pitches off the mound before Jarmon loaded the bases by reaching on an infield-error in an attempted sacrifice bunt.

Russo was then hit for a third time in the contest, bringing home Balestrini. Freda tied the game on a sacrifice fly before a left field single from O'Brien gave Bloomsburg a 7-5 lead going into the final frame.

A chaotic sequence with runners on first and second shifted the momentum in the visitors favor as they scored three on a pair of errors. An RBI-groundout from Kirk made it 9-7 heading into the bottom of the frame.

Three straight singles from the Huskies loaded the bases to start the bottom of the frame. Jeremy Stine (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) then stood in the box and watched four consecutive balls thrown to walk in the eighth run of the contest for the maroon and gold.

With just one out left in the frame, Russo was hit for the fourth time in the game and loaded the bases once again. This time it would be Freda who was hit by a pitch, bringing the tying-run across the plate in Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy).

On an 0-2 count for Hirsh, the freshman fired a grounder towards the shortstop who bobbled the ball and allowed Bloomsburg to walk it off on Senior Day.

Jaden Fabien earned the win for Bloomsburg in game two while Pete Modrovsky (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) pitched four innings of relief in the bout with one strikeout.

Bloomsburg heads to Lock Haven on Tuesday, April 14 as they take on the Bald Eagles at 2 p.m.
