PREVIEW: Men's Tennis Gears Up for NCAA Tournament

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – For the second year in a row, the Bloomsburg men's tennis team is gearing up to compete in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship tournament. The Huskies earned the No. 7 seed in the Atlantic Region and will travel to No. 2 Fairmont State on Monday, May 11 for a 10 a.m. match.
 
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
Monday, May 11
Match 1 – No. 2 Fairmont State vs No. 7 Bloomsburg – 10 a.m.
Match 2 – No. 3 Jefferson vs No. 6 West Virginia State – 2 p.m.
 
Tuesday, May 12
Match 3 – Match 1 Winner vs Match 2 Winner – 12 p.m.
 
HOW THEY GOT THERE
The Huskies earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 6-6 record in Division II this season. Bloomsburg made the PSAC tournament for the seventh straight season, falling to the eventually conference champions, Jefferson, in the semifinals.
 
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Bloomsburg is led by Denis Dementev (Saint-Petersburg, Russia/Russian Gymnasium at the State Russian Museum) who holds a 14-6 overall record this season and is 8-4 in dual matches at No. 1 singles. Freshman Jack Seaborn (Cambridge, England/The Leys School) holds an 8-4 record in dual matches as well, mainly in the No. 3 singles slot. Alex Higuera is 6-5 in dual matches, competing primarily in No. 2 singles.
 
In doubles action, Dementev has teamed with Sergio Dilan (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cedin) as the Huskies' No. 1 doubles pairs and holds an 8-4 record on the season. Jaime Soria (Pamplona, Spain/Liceo Monjardin) and Seaborn hold a 7-5 record as the No. 2 doubles duo this season while Landon Wall (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca High School) and Higuera are 6-6 at No. 3 doubles.
 
The Huskies and the Falcons faced off once this season, with Fairmont State besting Bloomsburg, 4-0. The match was closer than the 4-0 final shows, with the Huskies top three singles matches holding a 1-0 set lead when the match was called.
 
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
Fairmont State is 17-4 overall this season and finished as the runner-up in the Mountain East Conference this season.
 
IN THE OTHER MATCH
Jefferson earned the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Region after claiming the PSAC Championship in its first season competing in the conference. West Virginia State qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history, earning the No.6 seed.
 
UP NEXT
Following the conclusion of region play, 16 teams will advance to the play at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz. Single elimination competition begins on May 20 and continues through the national championship on May 24.
