BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's soccer team controlled possession and received goals from three different players to earn a 3-1 victory over Jefferson on Saturday evening at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Huskies (2-0) held 54% of the possession, outshot the Rams 8-5 and finished with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Bloomsburg limited Jefferson (0-1) to one shot over the opening 61 minutes while building a three-goal advantage.
Logan Savage (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Wood) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before Andrew Beagle (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) and Zayd DeVeaux (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) added second-half goals. Owen Hollobaugh (State College, Pa./State College), Brayden Ahlum (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and Owen Reager (Cornwall, Pa./Cedar Crest) each recorded an assist.
Bloomsburg established control early by patiently maintaining possession and working the ball through the midfield. The Huskies generated the first opportunity in the 17th minute when Seth Matson's (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) attempt went wide. Caleb Sitler (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) followed with another shot two minutes later as Bloomsburg continued to apply pressure in the attacking third.
The breakthrough came at the 22:07 mark. Hollobaugh helped create the opportunity before Savage finished the move for his first goal of the season, giving the Huskies a 1-0 advantage.
Jefferson recorded its only shot of the first half less than two minutes later, but Stone Campbell's attempt missed the target. The Bloomsburg defense did not allow another Rams shot for nearly 38 minutes.
The Huskies continued to dictate the pace through the remainder of the period, earning three corner kicks and holding 53% of the first-half possession. Bloomsburg entered halftime with a 3-1 advantage in shots and a 1-0 lead.
Jefferson attempted to push forward following the break, but the Huskies continued to control the ball and prevent the Rams from generating sustained pressure. Ryan Moroney (Blackwood, N.J./Sterling) and the Bloomsburg back line kept Jefferson without a shot until the 62nd minute, when Jude Clymer sent an attempt high.
Bloomsburg immediately answered at the other end.
The Huskies earned a corner kick at 62:26 and doubled their advantage 47 seconds later. Ahlum delivered the setup for Beagle, who converted his first goal of the season at 63:13 to put Bloomsburg ahead 2-0.
The Huskies kept the pressure on following the goal. Connor Fiadino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) had an attempt blocked later in the 64th minute, and Nicholas Guzak sent a shot wide in the 69th.
Bloomsburg's third goal came after another extended spell in the attacking half. Reager had a shot blocked in the 77th minute but stayed involved in the play, eventually connecting with DeVeaux for a finish at the 78:34 mark.
DeVeaux's first goal of the season gave the Huskies a commanding 3-0 advantage. It also marked the second consecutive match in which three different players scored for Bloomsburg. Six Huskies have accounted for the team's six goals through the opening two contests.
Moroney worked 83:09 in goal and did not allow a goal while earning his second victory of the season. He was supported by a Bloomsburg defense that held Jefferson without a shot on goal during his time on the field.
The Rams avoided the shutout in the closing minute when Thomas Dell'Omo finished a pass from Mohamed Elhendawy with 37 seconds remaining.
Bloomsburg placed all three of its shots on goal into the back of the net while holding Jefferson to one attempt on target. The Huskies also earned five of the match's six corner kicks and carried 54% of the possession.
The win completed a 2-0 season-opening homestand for Bloomsburg, which also defeated Felician 3-2 on Thursday. The Huskies have used six different goal scorers and six different players have recorded assists through the first two matches.
Bloomsburg travels to Frostburg State for a nonconference match Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. in Frostburg, Maryland.
