FLORENCE, Ala. --The third time was the charm for Bloomsburg University's
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) who on Friday night was named the 2013 winner of the Harlon Hill Award, symbolic of being the nation's top Division II player.
Quiteh, who finished third in the voting a year ago and sixth as a freshman, becomes the second Bloomsburg player in school history to win the award joining Irv Sigler who won the award in 1997.
In the voting by the Division II SID's Quiteh finished with 182 points to 146 for Dustin Vaughn of West Texas A & M. Kevin Rogers of Henderson State was third with 100 points. Quiteh had 36 first place votes, 28 second place votes and 18 third.
"I am at a loss for words about winning this award," said Quiteh in the press conference following the event. "It's a great honor and I am so thankful for having such great teammates around me. Without them I could not have achieved this honor."
"Finishing third last year was a motivating factor for me," Quiteh continued. "I knew I had to get better if I wanted to be able to win this so I put in a lot of work in the off season and it paid off tonight."
During this acceptance speech at the banquet Quiteh thanked all his coaches as well as naming each of his offensive teammates individually. But he saved his last thank you for his parents.
"I want to thank my parents for all the unconditional love you have always given me," said Quiteh. "You have always taught me to value education and how to respect both myself and others. Without the two of you none of this would be possible. I truly love both of you."
A consensus first team All-American (AP Little All-America, Daktronics, AFCA) Quiteh led D-II in rushing yards (2,195), rushing yards per game (182.9), rushing touchdowns (29) and scoring (15.7 points per game) during the 2013 campaign. He was also named the Daktronics Division II Offensive Player of the Year.
During the season he had six games with 200 or more yards rushing and 10 games with more than two touchdowns scored. Quiteh, the 2013 PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year and the Daktronics Super Region One Offensive Player of the Year, became the first player ever in D-II history to top 2,000 yards rushing in a season three times in a career.
Â
In addition he finished as the second all-time leading rusher in Division II history and fourth best among all divisions with 7,523 yards. Â For his career he owns a combined 20 school, PSAC and NCAA records.
Â
Quiteh was a big play runner through his career and had 48 carries this season in which he gained more than 10 yards; 14 attempts of more than 30 yards and seven rushes over 50 yards, including a career long 82-yarder against Slippery Rock. He set the school single-game record with 304 yard rushing against East Stroudsburg.
Â
He helped the Huskies to a 10-2 mark in 2013 with the team winning the PSAC Championship and earning a bye to the second round of the NCAA playoffs.
