EAST STROUDSBURG-- Tailback Derrick Price (Burlington, NJ, Burlington City) carried 23 times for 165 yards and one score to lead the fifth-ranked Bloomsburg University Huskies to a 27-13 win over East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup.
East Stroudsburg (5-2, 2-2 PSAC East) jumped in front on its second possession of the game when it took over in Bloomsburg territory at the 49-yard line and quickly moved downfield on a 35-yard pass from quarterback Matt Marshall to Ed Kiser before the drive stalled at the Huskies eight yard line. From there Drew Reinhard connected on a 26-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead for the Warriors.
The Huskies (7-0, 4-0 PSAC East) responded on their second drive going 57-yards in 13 plays and getting a 26-yard field goal from Jon Koenig (Pine Grove, Pine Grove). Bloomsburg had the ball inside the 10-yard line, but a penalty and a couple of incomplete passes forced the Huskies to settle for three points.
The Warriors went back on top 6-3 in the second quarter with drive set up by an interception of Huskies quarterback Dan Latorre (Elysburg, Southern Columbia). ESU drove inside the Huskies 20-yard line, but a third down sack of Marshall by Bloomsburg's Thomas McFarland (Pottsville, Pottsville) forced the Warriors to settle for a 40-yard field goal by Reinhard.
Bloomsburg answered right back on its ensuing drive needing just three plays to go 67 yards. Kenny Domzalski (Milford, Delaware Valley) started the drive with a 38-yard run and Latorre finished it with a 29-yard scoring pass to Cory Stiger (Williamsport, Loyalsock Twp.) making it 10-6.
The Huskies were later threatening before halftime driving to the Warriors 11-yard line, but Latorre was intercepted ending the drive.
Bloomsburg made it 13-6 on the opening drive of the third period driving from its own 31 to the Warrior 32-yard line. However, the drive stalled and Koenig hit a 49-yard field goal to extend BU's lead. On the kickoff, ESU's Jeff Giglio fumbled with Ryan Sanders (Danville, Danville) recovering for Bloomsburg at the East Stroudsburg 39-yard line. Three plays later Price ran 27-yards for a score making it 20-6 with 10:20 left in the third.
East Stroudsburg got the score back on its next series marching 80-yards in eight plays with Marshall throwing a 27-yard scoring pass to Sam Shuman making it 20-13 midway through the third. In the drive Marshall had a 22-yard run for ESU that brought the ball out to midfield.
In the fourth quarter the Huskies and Warriors traded punts before the Huskies were able to add the game-clinching score. After Bloomsburg got pinned back at its own two-yard following a punt, Price broke off a yard of eight yards followed by a 59-yard run down the Warrior 31-yard line. Domzalski then followed with a three-yard gain followed by a 28-yard scoring run with 4:15 left to play.
Along with Price's 165 yards, Domzalski added 81 yards on nine carries and one score, while tight end Ben Weaber (Lebanon, Cedar Crest) caught a career-high six passes for 65 yards. On defense, Anthony Smith (Pottstown, Pottstown) had 10 tackles, while Marcus Zimmerman (Lititz, Manheim Central) made seven tackles and had 2.5 sacks. For East Stroudsburg Marshall finished 16-29 for 215 yards and two interceptions and one score.
Bloomsburg hosts Cheyney in its annual homecoming game on Saturday with kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
