PSAC Release

BLOOMSBURG—Nikki Shiko (Shamokin, Southern Columbia) and Shavaun Fisher (Coplay, Allentown Central Catholic)have been named the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division Player and Pitcher of the Year respectively, while head coach Jan Hutchinson was named the PSAC Central Division Coach of the Year in voting by the conference coaches.

In addition both Shiko and Fisher along with Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport, Jersey Shore), Mandy Koch (Dauphin, Central Dauphin), Casey Massimini (Downingtown, Downingtown West) and Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore, Jersey Shore)were all named first team All-PSAC Central Division with pitcher Cait Paine (Lebanon, Lebanon) earning second team All-PSAC Central Division honors.

Shiko, a third baseman, finished second on the team in hitting with a mark of .389 and led the Huskies in hits with 68; runs scored with 58, triples with seven and RBI with 41 from her lead-off spot. She is also second in doubles with 12 and third in home runs with four. The senior had a team-high 22 multi-hit games and is second in multi-RBI games with nine. She is currently riding an 18-game hitting streak. Earlier this season Shiko was named the PSAC Central Division Player of the Week on March 3 after leading the Huskies to four wins after hitting .385 for the week.

In her career Shiko was named first team All-PSAC East as a sophomore and was twice named second team All-PSAC, once in the East and once in the Central Division.

Fisher earns the Pitcher of the Year award after posting a mark of 29-4 for the season with 1.07 ERA. The junior has fanned a career-high 255 batters, second best single-season mark in school history, in just 221 innings and has walked only 51. She has tossed 29 complete games, 11 shutouts and has two saves. During the season she has fashioned two no-hitters and two one-hitters and had 10-or-more strikeouts in a game 11 times, including a career-high tying 14 against East Stroudsburg. She earned PSAC Central Division Pitcher of the Week honors five times. One Fisher's most impressive outings was a13-inning, 1-0 win over division-rival IUP that gave Huskies sole possession of first place.

As a sophomore a year ago Fisher was named the first team All-PSAC Central Division and went on to earn second team All-Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Last week Fisher was named the MVP of the Huskies and picked up the school's Joanne McComb Award as the top Female Underclass Athlete for 2009-10.

Lazorka, a second baseman, was named All-PSAC for the first time in her career. The junior leads the Huskies in hitting this season with a mark of .407 and has 29 RBI. She is second in runs scored with 48, hits with 61 and has struckout just two times in 150 at-bats, one of the best marks in Division II.

On the Huskies spring break trip to Florida, Lazorka had a stretch where she went 10-12 with seven runs scored in a span of four games. For her play she was named the PSAC Central Division Player of the Week.

Koch, the Huskies shortstop, is hitting .331 with a homer and 29 RBI this year. She also has eight doubles, two triples and has scored 19 runs. She was named the MVP of the PSAC Softball championship tournament after going 4-9 and driving in six runs in three games. Koch was named second team All-PSAC a year ago.

Massimini earns her first All-PSAC selection in her senior year. The outfielder is hitting .343 this season with seven RBI. Despite batting ninth in the lineup, Massimini is a dangerous hitter with the ability to bunt and get infield hits. On several occasions this season with a drawn-in infield she has beaten out bunts for hits. She has scored 32 runs and leads the Huskies in stolen bases with 12.

Mauro, the Huskies catcher, is third on the team in hitting with a mark of .383 with a homer and 38 RBI, second best on the team. She has a team-high 15 doubles and is second in triples with three. The junior earned Central Division Player of the Week honors in late March after hitting .625 in five games at the Salem Invitational, going 10-for-16 with six runs scored, eight RBI and an .813 slugging percentage with three doubles. Mauro was named both the PSAC East Freshman of the Year and first team All-PSAC East in her rookie season of 2008.

Paine earns second team All-PSAC Central Division honors in her freshman season. The lefty is 15-1 with a 3.05 ERA with 13 complete games and three shutouts. She has struck out 80 and walked just 17 in 108 innings of work. On the Huskies spring break trip Paine tossed a five-inning no-hitter against Nyack College and also tossed a four-hit shutout against Bentley University.

Hutchinson earns PSAC Central Coach of the Year for the first time after previously being named the PSAC East Coach of the Year six times (1992, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001). In her 33rd and final season Hutchinson has guided the Huskies to a record of 44-5. Bloomsburg won its 15th PSAC championship and first since 2002 last weekend with wins in three games. During the 2010 season the Huskies put together a 22-game winning streak and have outscored opponents 317-122.

For her career Hutchinson, the all-time leader in division II in career wins with a mark of 1,209-285-2. She has guided the Huskies to 27, soon to be 28 straight, NCAA softball championships. Bloomsburg has been to the championship round nine times, twice finishing as the national runner-up with losses each time in extra innings in the national title game. She also has six third-place showings and two fourth-place finishes. The Huskies also won the 1982 AIAW national championship.

In softball, Bloomsburg holds 16 NCAA Division II individual, team or championship records. In only her fourth season, Hutchinson won the national championship "double" in the 1981-82 school year, claiming the field hockey title in the fall and the softball championship that spring. In addition, her players have enjoyed recognition in softball with 32 players earning 53 All-American awards.

As the Huskies field hockey coach Hutchinson ended her career with a record of 591-75-20. She is the all-time NCAA in career wins, regardless of division. She won her 16th and final NCAA D-II field hockey championship in 2009.

Hutchinson's achievements in coaching have not gone unnoticed by her peers. She has been honored with induction into both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Halls of Fame. In addition, Hutchinson was named the winner of the C. Vivian Stringer Award by the United States Sports Academy in the summer of 2006.

Hutchinson's coaching talents have not only helped those as student-athletes, but several of her former players have gone on to coach at the intercollegiate level. At Bloomsburg, she has former All-American performers as her top assistant coaches in softball.

Others have gone on to coaching jobs elsewhere, such as Janelle Breneman (assistant softball coach at the University of North Carolina), Marci Hickey (head softball coach at the University of Vermont), Leah Conte (former assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Mary Washington College) and Kathy Frick (former head coach at Goucher College, Bloomsburg and current head coach of Lafayette University lacrosse.)

Two former softball players have also played professionally. Janelle Breneman was a member of the Georgia Pride and Marty Laudato was a member of the Tampa Bay Fire Stix. In 1999 Laudato was named WPSL Hitter of the Year.

A 1971 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Hutchinson also earned a master's degree in education from the school in 1979. Prior to Bloomsburg, she initiated the women's physical education program at Blair Academy and served as head coach for field hockey, basketball and softball. She has also been inducted into the Newton High School and Sussex County (NJ) Halls of Fame. In the year 2000, the Bloomsburg softball field was named in her honor.
