BLOOMSBURG –
Tara Huber (Orefield, Parkland) and
Jamie Vaniver (Holland, Council Rock South) each scored a first-half goal as the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team defeated Slippery Rock, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.
At the 17:48 mark in the first half, Huber opened the scoring for Bloomsburg (3-0-1, 2-0-0 PSAC), taking the pass from
Ali McCrossin (Philadelphia, Little Flower) and putting the ball over the hands of SRU goalkeeper Dana O'Neill, giving BU the early 1-0 lead. The goal was Huber's fourth of the season.
Just seven minutes later, Vaniver notched her first collegiate goal, slipping the ball into the left corner of the net to make it 2-0 Huskies.
The Rock cut the lead in half at 2-1 later in the first half, when Shelby Ward beat BU goalkeeper
Frances Nicoletti (Haddonfield, NJ, Haddonfield) to the left corner of the net.
The second half was a defensive struggle as both offenses were kept in check, but Bloomsburg was able to win the battle and posted its second straight win.
Nicoletti stopped eight SRU shots, while O'Neill made four saves on the afternoon.
Each team had three corner kicks for the day, while Slippery Rock (3-2-0, 1-2-0 PSAC) held a 13-10 shots advantage.
The Huskies return to action Saturday afternoon to host Lock Haven for a 5 p.m. start.
