BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team behind
Kelsey Stoka (Langhorne, Neshaminy) and her two-goal performance upset #4 ranked West Chester, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.
In a true test for the Huskies, Bloomsburg came ready to play on both sides of the ball.
At the 12:08 mark in the first half,
Katie Walczuk (Long Valley, NJ, West Morris Central) took a shot that goalkeeper Lyndsie Bernardini was able to get a hand on, but never had full possession of the ball. The ball came off Bernardini and Stoka was at the right place at the right time, slipping the ball past the outstretched fingertips of Bernardini and into the right corner of the net, making it 1-0 Huskies.
Stoka's goal was the first one Bernardini allowed in the last 552 minutes of play.
At the 15:20 mark, BU goalkeeper
Frances Nicoletti (Haddonfield, NJ, Haddonfield), who denied shot after shot on the afternoon, made a big save on a ball off the foot of Melissa McKeary. It was a one-on-one opportunity, but Nicoletti was able to keep the Golden Rams off the scoreboard.
West Chester (7-1-0, 5-1-0 PSAC) had another opportunity just a minute later, when Sarah Oswald took aim at the net, but Nicoletti denied her shot and kept the Huskies on top.
In the second half, Stoka iced the match at the 73:32 mark when she took the feed from Walczuk again and found the right corner of the net, giving Bloomsburg the 2-0 lead.
The Golden Rams tried three more times in the final 10 minutes to cut into the Bloomsburg lead, but Nicoletti was able to record her third shutout of the year.
Nicoletti stopped 10 West Chester shots, as Bernardini did not record a save on the afternoon.
Bloomsburg (5-0-1, 4-0-0 PSAC) will travel to Gannon on Sept. 29 for a 5 p.m. start.
