BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team lost to Caldwell College by a score of 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday. It was the first game for the Huskies after the death of their teammate
Brian Savage (Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Area) last Saturday.
The Huskies went back and forth with the Cougars in the early before finally breaking through in the 25th minute when sophomore
Bryce Shaffer (Gettysburg, Gettysburg Area)r took a pass from
Tom Natter (North Hills, Abington) and hit the bottom corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Bloomsburg remained in control of the game that got physical at times with three yellow cards handed out in the first half. The Huskies kept the pressure on the Cougars throughout the second half, but Caldwell keeper John Londono made six second half saves to keep the game at 1-1.
Caldwell finally broke through in the 77th minute when Rob Arena scored on a double assisted play with Bryan Broderick and Chris Skarbelis being credited on the play.
The game remained scoreless through the end of regulation and through the first overtime period. In the second overtime Caldwell's Kristopher Bistre kept the ball in the Bloomsburg end and broke through the defense and hit the back of the net for the gamewinner.
Following the game the Bloomsburg men's and women's teams met at midfield in tribute to Savage while a poem was read in his honor.
The Huskies fell to 0-2 with the loss and will play at the District of Columbia on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed so the team may attend the funeral of Savage in Elizabethtown, PA.
