Wrestling Team Downs West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, WV—Coming off a disappointing home loss to Pitt last Sunday, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team went on the road and rebounded with a 25-10 win over EWL-rival West Virginia on Saturday night.

The Huskies, ranked 12th- in the NWMA Mid-Major poll, scored three wins in the match over ranked opponents; won four matches by two points or less and had one win by fall.
 
“This was a huge win for us (Bloomsburg),” said coach John Stutzman. “I am so happy for these guys. To come down here to West Virginia and win on the road is a hard thing to do. I always preach TEAM and this was a total TEAM effort. “
 
The night started the right for the Huskies. At 125 pounds Bloomsburg's Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) got an escape to start the third period and then added a point on riding time to knock off #23 Shane Young, 2-0. In the 133 pound match the Huskies Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) got off to a 3-1 lead, but fell to #26 Nathan Pennesi, 9-3, to even the match at 3-3.
 
The Huskies added another close win at 141 pounds when Derek Shingara (Shamokin/Shamokin) posted a 4-3 win over #29 Michel Morales putting Bloomsburg on top 6-3. Bloomsburg made it 10-3 when #32 Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) posted a 14-6 win over George Scheffel.
 
At 157 pounds #11 Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) scored a 2-0 win over Dominic Prezzia for a13-3 lead. Hickman got back on track after his 19-match winning streak snapped last week against Pitt.
 
In the 165 pound match Kevin Hartnett (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) won by decision over Kyle Eason 6-3 making it 16-3. The Huskies picked up their third win of the match over a ranked opponent when Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) scored a 2-1 victory over #20 Lance Bryson.
 
At 184 pounds West Virginia's 20th-ranked Matt Ryan scored a 9-2 win over Sam Shirey (Beaver Springs/Midd-West) cutting the Huskies lead to 19-6. At 197 pounds #31 Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) from Bloomsburg won by fall Nicholads Hylton in 2:51 to put the Huskies on top 25-6.
 
In the final match of the night West Virginia's Brandon Williamson, ranked #23, scored a win by major decision 10-1 to make the final 10-1.
 
The Huskies, 13-4, 1-1 in the EWL, are back in action tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at Ohio University.
