MADISON, Wisc. — The Bloomsburg wrestling team opened its 2026-27 season Sunday with a 34-7 loss to Big Ten opponent Wisconsin, highlighted by Morgan Schwarz's (South Brunswick, N.J./Saint Joseph) 14-6 major decision over No. 18 Cody Goebel at 165 pounds. The Huskies also competed at the Clarion Open, finishing fifth among nine teams with 27 points.

Schwarz Highlights Season-Opening Dual Against Wisconsin

Schwarz delivered the Huskies' biggest victory of the afternoon, earning a commanding 14-6 major decision over No. 18 Cody Goebel at 165 pounds. Facing a nationally ranked opponent, Schwarz secured four team points for Bloomsburg and provided one of the top individual performances of the opening weekend.

The victory followed a hard-fought performance from Michael Turi (Scranton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) at 157 pounds, who earned Bloomsburg's first dual-match win of the season with a 2-1 decision over Matthew Jens. Turi's narrow victory put the Huskies on the scoreboard before Schwarz followed with his eight-point triumph, giving Bloomsburg back-to-back victories in the middleweights.

Wisconsin established an early advantage with four consecutive decisions to open the dual, although the Huskies remained competitive in several tightly contested bouts.

At 125 pounds, Justin Jones (Orange County, Va./Locust Grove) battled Alan Koehler before dropping a 5-2 decision. Austin Pollard (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) nearly delivered an early victory for Bloomsburg at 133 pounds, falling by a single point, 10-9, to Peter Tomazevic.

Scotty Johnson (Muncy/Muncy) suffered a 14-7 setback against Collin McDowell at 141 pounds before Jay Chase (Wallingford, Conn./Martin T Sheehan) turned in another close performance at 149 pounds. Chase pushed Carson Exferd throughout a defensive battle before falling by the narrowest of margins, 1-0.

Following the victories by Turi and Schwarz, Wisconsin regained control of the dual in the upper weights. Luke Condon earned a fall over George Johnson (Mahopac, N.Y./Iona Prep) at 174 pounds in 6:12, while Clayton Whiting received a forfeit at 184 pounds.

Wyatt Bush (Grundy, Va./Grundy) fell to Wyatt Ingham by an 11-1 major decision at 197 pounds, and Mason Rebuck (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) dropped an 11-1 major decision to Braxton Amos in the heavyweight bout.

Despite the final score, Bloomsburg's middleweight performances provided a strong early-season highlight, with Schwarz's nationally ranked victory and Turi's decision accounting for all seven of the Huskies' team points.

Huskies Finish Fifth at Clarion Open

Bloomsburg also opened its tournament schedule Sunday at the 2026 Clarion Open, finishing fifth in the nine-team field with 27 points. Six Huskies earned at least one contested victory, led by multiple-win performances from Coy Raines (North Chille, N.Y./Churchville-Chille) and Gavin Hannah (Brookville, Pa./Brookville).

Raines put together one of the strongest tournament performances for Bloomsburg at 197 pounds, advancing to the championship semifinals with two victories.

He opened his tournament with a third-period fall over Clarion's Connor Smalley, securing the pin in 5:17 during the round of 16. Raines followed with an 11-5 decision over Chandler Thompson of Utah Valley in the quarterfinals, earning a spot among the final four wrestlers in the championship bracket.

Raines' championship run ended with a semifinal loss by fall to Ohio State's Ryder Rogotzke. He subsequently forfeited his remaining consolation bouts, finishing sixth in the weight class.

At 184 pounds, Hannah bounced back through the consolation bracket to earn a fifth-place finish. Hannah defeated Clarion's Coy Bryson, 5-0, in the consolation round of four before closing his tournament with a 7-4 decision over Utah Valley's Jason Singer in the fifth-place match.

Eric Alderfer (Harleysville, Pa./Faith Christian) also delivered a strong tournament performance at 157 pounds, advancing to the championship semifinals and ultimately earning a fifth-place finish. Alderfer opened his tournament with a 6-3 decision over Clarion's Matthew Smith and continued his run into the championship semifinals, where he fell to Ian Fritz by a 10-3 decision. Moving into the consolation bracket, Alderfer dropped a 7-1 decision to Wesley Barnes in the consolation semifinals before earning fifth place by medical forfeit over Keegan Goeas.

Also competing at 157 pounds, Jah Bushati (Summit Hill, Pa./Mahoney) earned a tightly contested 5-4 decision over David Fernandez of Nassau Community College in the consolation bracket, adding another victory for Bloomsburg.

At 149 pounds, Coltan Jones (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) picked up a 9-5 decision over Clarion's Brecken Cieleski in the consolation round of eight, giving the Huskies another individual victory.

Gavin Martin (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) rounded out Bloomsburg's tournament winners at 125 pounds, delivering an 8-0 major decision over Clarion's Peyton Costa. Martin's shutout was one of the Huskies' most decisive victories of the tournament.

With six wrestlers earning contested victories and three placing among the top six in their respective weight classes, Bloomsburg concluded its opening day with several encouraging individual performances against competition from across the Division I landscape.

The Huskies get back to action next weekend at the Journeymen Classic Wrangle Mania against Sacred Heart and Duke on Saturday, November 7.
